Very excited right now after spotting this car 3 years ago and 4 months of negotiations i just bought this CSL  vin # 2285186 sold new in the UK

Its a right hand drive 1972 CSL finished in Fjord blue with city package, electric windows, its been in Los Angeles since the late 70's judging from the blue California license plates, it was last registered in 1986 and has been in storage since then. Has 94,500 miles which i think are original, the engine has all the original hose clamps and parts which is nice to find, interior is pretty rough as the windows were smashed about 3 years ago and the sun has cracked the wood, trees were growing through the back window!!

Rust is very minimal which is super rare, floor pans, window surrounds, spare tire pan, shock towers are all rust free, small spot of rust on one rocker panel, and the left inner panel was patched years ago, which i am going to redone to make sure its done properly.

Going to need some glass, carpet, redo the seats, door panles, correct steering wheel, and some new tires, drain all the fliuds and refill, lube the cylinders by hand and try to start her up next week.

If anyone has some info on the car like when and where is was sold in the UK that would be great, and a lead on some parts as well

cheers
neil

Congrats. Great find..

When you say its been in storage - was it sitting outside all those years from 86? Looks like most of her is still intated.

Sounds like whoever owned the car, wasn't willing to part with it based on the 4 months of haggling.

no it has been outside since i first saw it about 3 years ago, before it was kept indoors, the seats have the date 16 june 1973 stamped on the foam under the seat not sure what they are from a CSL or a Porsche, they have some brackets welded on to the rails which are not factory, does anyone know?

yes he was not willing to separate with the car, it took a lot of phone calls :-D
but i got the job done and its in my driveway now!

Welcome and congratulations!

It sure is great to be able to fix, cruise, update/mod (though I'm all original)...enjoy the e9 and have fun while you're at it.

Congrats!!!Does it still have the CSL Aluminum Hood and Trunk?I assume the doors are Steel as you said it was a City Pack Car.
It looks like it might still have the original CSL Black Plastic covers for the seat rails for the Factory Scheel seats.Hard to tell for sure from the picture you posted.
Good luck with your project.

Looks like a great find - the uk cars that I have seen all had aluminium door skins but its very hard to say anything with certainty when talking csls!

Best of luck!

Contemplating the challenges of driving a RHD car in a country where we drive on the right side of the road?

-tj in Los Gatos

The US Postal Service has a whole fleet of RHD vehicles :). Imagine mail delivery in a CSL.

Hi, I bought CSL #188 at the weekend, only two away from yours.

Mind was manufactured on November 9th, 1972 and went on November 13th, 1972 to Great Britain. The original colour was Fjord metallic, paint code 037.

e-mail Andreas Harz at BMW Group Classic
[email protected]

and they'll tell you when yours was made and where it was orginally shipped to.

cool i just emailed him, i wonder how many city pack cars were built, and how many fjord blue cars.

Welcome to the CSL club  if you find on your travels i need a lower dash trim panel below the steering wheel, i am not going to find one here in the US being a right had drive car.

I don't suppose you have any record of the registration number do you? Here in the UK a car keeps the same registration it's entire life unless someone wants to actually pay to change it - It might help your investigation of its life here if you knew this.

unfortunately i dont, i know it was built on Nov 14th 1972 and delivered to UK BMW importer in Brighton Sussex on Nov 16th

I did see a sticker on the fuel tank dated 8/4/75 Smith Bros (Pershore ) Ltd
radiator specialists Head St Pershore Worcs and they have a branch in Redditch, not sure if they are still in business, or who the importer in UK would be back then.
