With a couple of kidneys floating around for sale, the thought occurred to remove the one from my parts car... that now has one good stud, and three that are sadly short on threads...Has anyone tried to/successfully replaced the studs with anything that works? It would make great wall art, as it is in really nice shape, but I'd love to see it live again...Appreciate any thoughts...

Visual learner needs picture of said studs. My grille is attached by machine screws.

Here is a picture where you can see the studs, I don't know if they all look the same but this is a grille with four black plastic slats.

Cheers,

I think that's a late 2002 grille? Mine is from a 72, five slat, not black...all aluminum.
Andrew, I don't think there is enough left to attach those brass pieces to..I'm not sure how much room there is from the grille bracket to the respective bodywork bracket for an extension, if I had threads.
Mark, I'm a computer dolt; will send pic to your email (post if you can)

Dave,

'74 grilles were black plastic 4 slat. not sure exactly when they changed, but they did (not sure if they changed prior to the '74 model year). Robert's grille should be metal 5 slat for a '71 3.0csi.
take a look at a standoff spacer -

it would screw onto whatever is sticking out of the existing stud and allow you to but a nut on the other end.

Aha...74 then is like my 76 2002...
And the standoff spacer now makes sense with female/male threads..I guess that I would need to go to Fastenal/similar, with my one good stud to determine the thread size...maybe they even have these....Thanks

Dave,

with the price these things go for now, and how scarce good ones are for sale, it makes sense to find creative ways to be able to use ones that people have lying around.

Computer zero-head...here is (hopefully) image of grille (off of a copy...)

Not much stud left and the threads fit through a very small opening in the body, not sure those extenders would slip through and then they would be too long?

...Chris...same thought that I had about the distance from grille bracket to body bracket...
Maybe if I reverse the engineering and drill out the grille brackets enough to run a sheetmetal screw through from the backside? (radiator towards front bumper?)

...Sh*t folks, I'm just tickled just to have posted an image on the site for the first time ever!

Hi Dave, I was thinking drill out existing studs and put small metric bolt in from behind using some JB weld to keep it in place, probably last quite a while.

All input much appreciated, thanks. DV
Hi Dave;
I have improvised on many repairs and in many cases used plastic bolts and nuts to solve the problem of never rust and be impossible to remve in the future.
Any hardware store has a nice variety of sizes.
