Lan-Trim gearshift console reconstruction

I’m reviving a dead thread as I’m trying my own hand at this. The issue I’m having is bunching around the corners where the corners of the aluminum trim are. It is geometrically not possible for a flat piece to wrap around those contours without stretching/bunching.

Obviously dequincey managed it, partly due to skill but maybe also the material he used? Or the glue? I’ve gone through 4 vinyl products to get one that is close to the right thickness and sheen, but the grain is too big and it seems it will bunch there when I try to glue it down.

Any advice from @deQuincey or others who have tried this? I think the order you press it down may be important too. Hide the bunches under the aluminum rather than have them visible on the face?

i did it with leather (normal thickness). i stretched it over the corners, pulling it over the edge, then cutting and folding on the hidden side. i primarily used adhesive, but i also used a few thin / short staples to tack it into place. i did this about 4 or so years ago ... but i know i used the original vinyl as a template.

Yeah, that’s what I’m aiming to do too. Made a template with the original, now pulling over edge and cutting/folding the hidden side. The only issue I’m having is the complex shape at the corners of the aluminum. Do you remember any issues there?

If you start with the material following closely along the track where the aluminum will rest, then it starts bunching as soon as you try to fold it down onto the vertical face. I’m thinking about it like origami - there is no way to make that shape (like the edge of a staircase) without cutting the paper, which means vinyl or leather will inevitably bunch or stretch.

Maybe I will start with the vertical face, then fold up and over (kind of bridging the depressed track for the aluminum) and then later use the aluminum to push/stretch it down into the track?
