Have any of you seen this before? Is there a purpose except for a harder return of the handle?

I am on the wrong side of the door to see, but I assume the concept is that if you use springs they eventually age or break, if you use weights gravity never fails.

Yes, I have these lead pieces on my coupe ('72). I assume they help move the handle back to the return position. There should be a layer of felt on the flat surface of the lead piece.

yes, i heard a crash a year or so ago, and couldn't figure out what it was when i fished it out behind the door panel. but the outside door handle still feels the same and springs back normally. thanks for the info bit.

I left the felt off mine when I put it together (lazy me) but I found that the door closed and latched with less slamming with the weight on there. Of course it could be just my magination...

hi
