I purchased a 2800 a few months ago and it is still at the shop getting some repairs. I asked if they could source a upholster and see if a small 2 inch rip in the leather could be patched repaired and I was told the leather was to dry rotted. I did not remember seeing rot. Does any know if it can be repaired anyway.

Thanks for your input.

Where are you Robert? I'm thinking of having mine redone and if you're close to Austin we could maybe work something with my guy.

leather

There is a family owned business in Raleigh that is supposedly excellent...I haven't used them, but plan to...Friend in Greensboro used them on seats for his coupe and said they we meticulously done and relatively cheap...JB Auto Upholstery 919.832.2969..couple of hours from you, I think.
Dry rot usually means that the leather has dried such that a needle will start a split/cause a tear, instead of punching a hole and allowing you to cinch a seam...not really a rot per se, (as in wood, where it's a fungal issue) as much as a loss of natural oils...Loses it's integrity...think cardboard.

Thanks for the fine advise. If I'm not mistaken, cant the leather be patched from the back by placing material/leather below the tear and gluing it together. It is the original 1970 blue leather and I would hate to have the seat redone.

Thanks,

Robert,

I have a 72 CSI with a leather interior that I've owned for 30 years and had twice removed the finish, repaired small cracks, tears, and holes with crack fillers and small patch pieces I cut off the back of the rear seats and then re-dyed them with repair kits from Leatherique.

The original pig skin eventually got so dry and brittle that it became a losing battle so last year I bought new leather replacements from World Upolstery.

If your leather is not dried out beyond repair check out the Leatherique website for repair kits and maybe it is something you could do yourself. If you send them a small piece of your leather they can match the color.

From my days on the BMW M3 forum , I remember the guy who posted this thread was pretty obsessed with detailing cars.

He was not a Leatherique fan (Although he was in earlier threads). I have given my E9 about three rounds of Leatherique product since purchasing it. It softened the leather quite nicely.
My Pristine clean has gone bad though and smells like a pig farm now.

patch pieces

Maybe put a note in "parts" and "e3" for "WTB usable original blue leather scraps..." A lot of people like me hang on to things that they shouldn't, accdg to my wife...Dave V. in NC
