To bad they are for 1974 and 1975 E9s only...

The horizontal seat covers only fit 1974/75 E9s for several reasons even the head rests are different. Unfortunately that kinda reduces the market because the 2800CS and early 3.0CS owners cant use them...

Pardon my ignorance but what are the reasons they won't fit?

well theoretically they fit ... just won't fit just right. these have the horizontal panels ... and the pre '74 have vertical panels. you will also find that the headrests are flatter on the early cars ... more sculpted on later cars.

The seats are slightly larger and have extra pleats!

The 1974/75 seats have slightly more stuffing and the pattern is horizontal, There is also a seam on the outside of the later seats. Plus the head rests are curved on the top like a Mercedes.
