Some useful upgrades, the image makes the lights look a little brighter than they do in real life

Did you replace all 4 headlights, or just 2?

I'm intrigued, as i plan on driving my car a lot, and good lights all round will be good insurance against driver mistakes

Erik, Headlights in Europe require national approval by the regulators to be compliant with local laws - I guess you know that.

There is one H1 LED compatible with the Hella headlights we have on the E9:
philips ultinon pro6000 h1 led boost gen2

I am currently working to get these accepted by the Austrian regulator for the E9, as they are street-legal for the E21 in the same Hella headlight we have in the E9.

I did this test arrangement in by basement: left is the original H1, right is the LED:

my limited experience with LED bulbs in our vintage housings shows that the reflection + refraction (thru the lens) leaves a lot to be desired. because LED is very linear, it doesn't 'bounce' / refract as well - most new applications send light straight out without reflection. in both of the pics of the LED bulb in your lamps, notice the 'blank' spot at the top. that will probably be a blank spot somewhere on the road / in front. it looks brighter, and it is a 'whiter' light, but doesn't always get light where you need it. sooner or later they will figure it out, but there is a reason that most LED fixtures don't use faceted lenses as they aim where the light goes vs. vintage bulbs that sent light out omni-directionally so the reflector + lens distributed the light. you will also see that shadows are very crisp instead of diffused due to the linear nature of the source. that being said, i have not seen these newest versions of the bulbs ... they could be much better than a few years ago with the placement of the diodes to hit the reflectors ... but the facets are much different on each manufacturer's glass. the low beam cutoff generally doesn't work as well.
