Hello everyone, looking at a late 73 3.0cs. Car looks to be in pretty good shape overall.

Engine is currently out of the car so I am able to get a decent look at the firewall and fender areas.

Being relatively new to e9s can the cohort provide some thoughts on the bay and condition.

Hello, the front strut towers look suspect (or maybe it's the lighting), please post some close up of those areas for both sides.

hard to tell.

Also look behind the glovebox and fuse box door for signs of rot on the firewall.

Be nice if you had a boroscope to look inside the fenders.

Floors of course is a tell tale sign that moisture dripped down to lower extremeties.

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you have a 1970 2002. Look at all of the rust areas on your car and know the Coupe rust areas will be much more. The fenders, if needed, have to be cut off and then welded back on compared to the 2002. Be prepared to spend $$$ and months before you have a car that can be driven. Keep those thoughts in mind when making your decision on a project as opposed to buying a car that can be driven.

Find a e9 knowledgeable soul nearby and take them with you to look it over. More importantly is taking an evaluation... of yourself..

  1. Are you hands off or hands on? This will impact the cost no-matter what the condition.
  2. Have you had previous experience with project cars?
  3. Do you have knowledgeable friends that are in the industry? Body shop, mechanics, heavy drinkers...
  4. Do you have the time and space required to take on a project? If it spirals into a bigger project?
  5. What is your financial and psychological breaking point? Do you have a history of mental instability? (one could say this post shows distinct evidence of said instability)
  6. If you have a partner, is he/she empathetic? Are they caring and nurturing? Test: Would they get upset if you were to rebuild a set of grunge encased carburetors on the kitchen table?
We look forward to another lost and demented soul joining our ranks!

Appreciate everyone’s insight so far. More pictures and details to come.

Couple additional things it’s a euro ‘74 Belgian market car (might explain the different brake booster)

Answering other things

1. Hands on - the fleet of old BMWs has facilitated that (70 and 73 2002s, e28/e34 m5s, 840)
2. More than I probably should have
3. Yep a wide variety of automobile degenerates
4. More of a problem at the moment upcoming move to TN will open things up
5. This post and years in the Army probably are indicative of this
6. She actually found it.. “hey I found one of those pretty bmw coupes” I may have been known to forget car parts in the dishwasher… busted

You'll have no problem then...(tongue firmly in cheek)

Wouldn't worry too much about the brake booster. The 3.0 S ECE 4-speed stayed with that model until 1977. Only 3.0 S ECE automatic & all USA versions had the large booster. Of course, that's how it was for the E3. If E9 were similar or different, I cannot say.

The typeplate has been remounted, right. Apart from that, this typeplate is the only and correct one for Belgium-delivered BMW of the time. It was first fixed to a 3.0 CS by or on behalf of the importer "BMW-Belgium" N.V. (dutch) or S.A. (french) in the city of Kontich. Belgium is a bilingual country, so Belgian authorities demanded a bilingual typeplate. "PVA No." is the governmental type approval number, 41266 for a 3.0 CS or e.g. 41431 for a 3.3 Li A. This typeplate is more or less the same as the USA-only sticker showing production month & year and VIN near the common typeplate or on the bottom of the B-pillar, different only insofar as for the USA the German plate remained in the car. So nothing unusual here. Additional country-specific typeplates were required at least in France, Switzerland and Australia.

More pictures of the fender areas.
