I was going to put this in off topic but its a diff in an old merc sl thats noising and it is sort of relevant!

I don't want to pull it and rebuild change it and its getting a bit whiney. In the interim could I put in heavier gear oil to quieten it? Or would this make it 'wear out' more quickly?

Thanks

Hi Rohan,
I assume this is your Black SL I saw eons ago!
The SL diff takes EP90, assuming it's not a LSD, which is pretty heavy to begin with.
You can get additives such as Wynns, STP etc which sometimes help quietening things down.
Mrs Malc is now driving around in a 380 with 327,000 plus miles!! The diff does growl a little but it has never got any worse since we have owned it, regular oil changes seem to help.
I suspect though it may be a bit whiney you will get a few more miles out of it yet.

Hi Rohan, to add to Malcs suggestions there is also a diff and gear treatment manufactured by a company called Forte which is very good. You can't buy it in the shops its sold to repair shops only. Check out "The good garage scheme" on the internet if you put in your post code it'll locate the nearest garage that stocks it. Its a little more expensive than the other brands but it is good. If you're having trouble locating it let me know and I'll post you a tube or I'll be at the Ace 9 April I'll bring you one down.
Regards gazzol

Hi Malc and Gary, thanks for the help.

Yes Malc it is the black sl - it will never part company with me! I love the 107's - built like tanks. This one has done 168k miles and is still on the original clutch. The hard top is fairly flakey down the bottom though so I m hoping to fix that this summer.

That is fair mileage on your wife's car! Has it had much major work done?

I will change the oil and add some activ8 - a friction reducing additive - you guys ever heard of it?

Hows the car coming along Gary? What is on at the ACe on the 9th? I might head down.

Regards,

Rohan

I ahd an 84 Sl and it started to do the same thing. It had an extended warranty....dealer wanted to replace the diff, warranty people said it was normal wear/tear. It did get replaced...but bottom line it was annoying but not something that was ready to break apart.
