I wasn't thinking of any particular M3 engine, just wanted more power and it was a thought. I Think I'll stick with my engine (3.0 for now), I love the way it drives, I just hate the thought of having this car off balance.
maybe a 3.3L??? or 3.5???

Those are good choices because they are really the same engine, the M30. If you have a major hankering for more NA power, the S38 makes an excellent choice, as it is a 3.5 to 3.8L straight 6 used in E28 and E34 M5s and E24 M6s.

There have been a variety of threads detailing the various M30 setups, so poke around a bit, and I'm sure you'll find more than you are looking for.

For a M3/E30 conversion

This would be the right car for such a M3 E30 conversion.....:
Located in Vienna, but not mine...........

Would just like to put in the 'ol twopence that to install an S38 B35 twin cam engine (e28) is not a straight (or painless) swap. And an S38 B36 (E34 3.6 - 3.8L M5) swap should only be attemped if you are deeply into sadomasochism (or you can pay someone else - i.e. big $$$ - who enjoys such things).
If you like plenty of ponies, contact Shawn Essex who runs a single cam in his race car and who was able to pull past me at the start of a race even with my newly installed 3.6L M5 engine (did that piss me off or what!)

"You know what would look really great? An E30 M3, but bigger!"

"Uh, but isn't the reason why the E30 M3 is great is because it is small and nimble?"

"Yeah, but this will be awesome! I know, I'll combine it with the most beautiful BMW ever made, the 503! No, wait, those are too expensive. I'll use a 3.0CS instead."

"Riiight..."

Those question i ask him too. His answer: It looks better. :(
So much work (in top quality) for what?
Look at the pictures, all chrome is black powdercoated.
And the fenders, the trunk, the hood, the tail-lights, the fitting accuracy.
And the car is totally rust-free ! What a mess ! CRAZY !

To add insult to injury, only the stock engine under all that. At least turbo the thing so the fender flares aren't just for show!
