Cylinder Head IS Toast

The cylinder head on my CSL – M30 B30 is badly cracked and the engine builder has asked me to find another good one! – that’s easy!!!!!

He can cut out all the cracks and weld it all up – but he says that because of the large amounts of cracks the head could distort and cause problems with the cam.

If it distorts and the cam journals need line boring, ( this is me paraphrasing now. and may not have got it quite right from what he says) .. but because the cam is cast – he can’t metal spray it bigger to fit the bigger holes.

So, my questions and search for help is.

Do any of the other heads of the B30 engine fit – I may have a chance for a 735 (1982) engine.

There are a few b30 heads on the web for sale .. but do all B30 heads fit the M30 B30 engine specification??

Or any other help on what I should do…

I will keep the old head with the car…..

Thanks

Marc

Since it's a CSL, I don't know how much importance having the date casting in the head match the chassis has. It's common for heads to be changed as they wear (and crack, in your case), so it shouldn't effect value. All M30 heads bolt on the same, regardless of CCs. The 7 series head is a perfect candidate. Any head with a date stamp from '82-'87 is your best donor. You'll need to swap in your existing cam for whatever cam is in the later donor head. There's no value in keeping your old head, as there's nothing special about it.

@Marc-M,

Given the amount of work that you have into your CSL, you may want to find an original. Are you cool paying for a core, shipping it to the UK, and potentially welding that one up? If not, go with what makes sense and is available. Strange that it cracked. Did your CSL have a thermal reactor? :D

Let me know if you want to hunt down an original. I may have a few leads in Europe. A friend and I just sourced a nice original CSI/CSL head for his client not too long ago.

Hi Markos
Been to look at the head and its got cracks between the valve and spark plug plus corrosion, but have spoken to a company who can mend it! - so sending it down for him to look at -
However if it all goes wrong - I will be in the market for a head - so if you know of one, I would probably get it.
However when at the engine builder - he has shown me the oil pump ( I got new insides) and both internal facings have scratches on! - so im now on the look out for a oil pump!

If you know where I can get one??

Regards

Marc
