electronic speed output

I dunno but there are companies that make conversion boxes that take an electronic pulse in and convert it to a mechanical drive output. These are specifically designed for adapting modern transmissions into old cars.
I've never used one myself and can't vouch for their reliability.

It is a lot of money for parts you can't use. A good used mech drive speedo 265 has gone up to around $700 though from $350 a few years ago.

Thanks Chris. I've been trolling boards to find a steal on a proper parts car. I guess it's still a little premature given I don't even have the original car back from the shop yet. I wonder if I will be more anxious to buy stuff when I have the car or less once I'm able to drive it.

the e30 m3 has a pulse generator on the diff ... which sends a signal to the drive on the odo, which makes it turn like an analog odo. seemed to work pretty well.

the trannies frorm the pre 84 e24s have a mechanical speedo drive. I also believe many of the others have the internal gear and all you have to buy is the out put shaft with the small gear on it. I sold a 265/6, which is the O/D 5 speed with a separate bellhousing, to a fellow. The trans came out of an 85 E24 and had the complete set up for a mechanical speedo
