Manual choke

Hi all,

I am running Weber 38/38 carbs on my engine. Generally this setup works very well for me except for cold starts (around 10C to freezing). The engine takes a long while to fire up then stumbles, backfires through the carbs etc... for quite some time before getting anywhere near a normal idle. I have a suspicion that the electric chokes are not performing their job as well as they should. I read elsewhere that some people have been very happy with a manual choke setup.

Does anybody have any thoughts / experience on this? Also, if I did go this route can anybody tell me where they installed the choke lever in the cabin?

Cheers

I have a manual choke operating my 32/36's and it works GREAT. Both 32/36 and 38/38 carbs come in 3 versions: electric, water and manual choke. I don't know whether you could convert your electric choked 38/38's to manual, but a quick visit to the Carbs Unlimited website shows "DGMS" manual choke 38/38 Webers priced at $335 apiece. See: http://www.carburetion.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?part=18930.086

I mounted a generic choke cable to the lower left of my steering column, where there was an unused provision for a switch. I did have to drill out the depression and make a simple metal bracket which is visible in the picture above. The orientation of the 32/36 (and I assume 38/38) carbs on the e9 manifold puts the two choke pulls in line, so a single cable easily handles both carbs. The cable exits through an existing grommet in the firewall where wiring and heater hoses come through. It makes an "S" in the engine compartment, passing from left to right behind the rear carb.

Would it be wise to have someone manually hold the choke while you start up to ensure this is the issue? I ask only because the Zeniths have what amounts to a cold start valve which can fail. If no such thing on Webers, I guess my statement is moot.

Thanks for the feedback especially for the pic of the lever location (great idea!). I will have another look at the choke flaps regardless to make sure there is nothing obviously wrong.
