Monterey fire!...

I believe it is moving southeast but the inciweb site is the best place to find the current boundaries. Hwy 1 should be OK but fire equipment and gawkers may slow down your travel. Thursday is not the day to head north on the 1, it will back up at the Carmel River bridge southwards for a mile or more.

So, anything those of us who have no experience dealing with wildfires should be aware of when planning to travel to this area?

In this case it would be checking for road closures and traffic. Traffic is a given, but they'll close roads in a heartbeat is there's any threat. Because of where it is I wouldn't expect it to go back toward the ocean so highway 1 will just have added traffic.

BigSurCalifornia.org is reporting that Route 1 is open to through traffic, but that "it is a bit smoky in the northern section of Big Sur and Bid Sur Valley." This site also reports that next week there will be 1-way controlled traffic just South of the San Luis Obispo/Monterrey county line and that Route 1 will be closed overnight on Tuesday, August 9 near Lucia and the Big Creek Bridge.

Caltrans is reporting single lane controlled traffic too, but does not report that Route 1 is closed.

They are always working somewhere on the 1. Delays are due to alternating traffics and should not be bad, five minutes maybe.
