This time to see if I have an M102 or an M106 or something completely different. We're pretty sure these came out of a couple of 745i e24's so we're close there. I've got the head off of one type of turbo, no engine block included, the distributer is driven off the end of the cam directly, no right angle drive. What is it from and what would be a good block to mount this on?

These next shots are off a complete engine. A complete block/head combo, different than the one above. No shots of the side of the head bolted to it, either. Unfortunately it's 800 miles away in another state on the floor of my garage there so I can't just run out and take more shots if needed. If these aren't correct, where are the identifying numbers located on the block? Should I have my helper try to take some shots of the "turbo" (if it's there on the head) on the complete engine?

I've Googled both M102 and M106 but I really can't tell which is which. Any suggestions?

Hi Bwana- I have owned 8 of these and still have one in the driveway.
If you want to call me I will go through the difference s with you.

Quick thoughts...
The head wth "turbo" on it is for a m106, 8:1 compression. 3.5 engine.
252 hp Motronic.
Production started in June of 1983.
Green top injectors ending in ....200
Only came in auto tranny but I have made a bunch into manuals.
144 mph in 3rd gear in auto
You can do 155-160 in a 5 speed with your fingers crossed.
It's the one you want.

Beans-

Do you have the turbo as well? Is that the goal or is it simply finding a "better" head for the M30B34? Does anyone run the full turbo/inter cooler setup?

Don't get your hopes up- look closely at the upper timing cover...
Something evil happened to get the head off without taking the cover off first.
Looks like the cam gear exploded.
The 745i motronic head has a euro K cam and nickel alloy exhaust valves.
Different exhaust studs and that's it.
The second head is dated 83 but is using a Jetronic temp sensor.

The key is look for the dimples cast into the head to tell about thickness and have a machine shop inspect.
