My garage faces a commercial parking lot often used by customers of a fine wine specialty shop, Staples, and other commercial stores all facing away from my garage but at times there has been a considerable amount of traffic in the area. With my tinkering in the garage with doors open it has been a fairly common experience to have BMW enthusiasts spot my Coupe, Bavaria and 2002 and stop to look and engage in conversation about them. And, more than once has resulted in the party who stopped to chat asking me to help them find a nice Coupe for their toybox.

Back to the real story--on not one--but two separate occasions--during warm weather I was tinkering with the doors open and on the first occasion--I heard a melodious female voice proclaim "this has always been my favorite BMW" I looked up to see this lovely creature of about mid thirties in age with her arms extended over the trunk of the BLUMAX as in a big hug--and my comment was " this car is older than you so how come it is your favorite?"--answer--" I grew up with them"--please explain lovely creature--"my Father was the first BMW dealer here in Orange County his name was Roy Carver--yes I knew Mr Carver--he was also the Rolls-Royce Dealer in those days as well and coincidentally his first store was very near by where I live. I thought afterwards this has to top any recent experience with the BLUMAX.

Again it happened--on the second occasion--similar melodious voice declaring--"this has always been my favorite BMW"--once again this old man was blessed with eye candy as another lovely embraced the trunk of BLUMAX--but a different and even younger creature and as it turned out a neighbor--"now little one how could this old BMW have always been the favorite of a child like you?"--I thought it to be a reasonable question--answer was a question she posed--"did you ever know the original BMW Dealer in Santa Monica?--by gum I did as very early on I had been in that place of business--"That was my Father's Dealership."

Now if someone can tell me what the odds might be of these two experiences and then top my story let it fly--as I have been personally blessed beyond any reasonable expectation by these two most unexpected and delightful "Coupe Happenings".

BTW--I didn't make up these stories--but have just shared them for the first time.

Murray you stud!!! great stuff....don't stop there......Now I've really got to finish my ride this summer.

God Bless Murray

Murray, I am so happy that you survived these events! I know it had to put a tremendous strain on your heart, and you probably even did a jig!

Now a girl whose old man owns a bmw dealership and likes e9's - i might even manage to hold down a relationship with one of them!

Many believable stories to tell--GW

I'm about 12 hours away from my Birthday--will celebrate the big 80--so when one has hung around as long as that your story box will be full too--and it won't be necessary to even embellish them--just tell 'em as they were--that is ahh--if you can remember same!!

Someday I'll share some stories of the long trips I have taken in the BLUMAX--

Was out today in BLUMAX for a brisk run of a few miles--just another nice winter day here in SoCal--a thought crossed my mind as to the gratitude I now feel for the opportunity of being here as I briefly reflected on the years I spent in Michigan and New Jersey before moving West--our day here a major contrast with you guys "back east"--what with your freezing rain, snow and bitter cold--we are promised a sunny--but windy day here tomorrow with temparatures reaching about 80 degrees (fahrenheit) for my similar numbered Birthday. WOW 80--reality is sometimes difficult to embrace!!!!

Now is a good time to start your book. You may have to tone down the Title however....BLUMAX sounds a little too much like one of those annoying enhancement emails I delete without opening. But then again, it may be just the appropriate hook. You're the best....Happy Birthday!!

Murray

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MURRAY, keeper of the history of the coupe......need it in writing....

80 years old!?! Happy Birthday! That's quite an accomplishment. Just to put it in perspective, I'm turning 40 this year. I figure that's just about the age you were when you got your first coupe.

So help me figure out what car I could buy new off the lot this year -- with the beautiful lines and timeless style of a coupe -- and continue to enjoy and cultivate stories for the next 40 years. Does anything like that even exist?

Happy Big Day, Murray. I must say you neither look nor act your age! And I mean that as a sincere compliment. We all should be so energetic and vibrant at 80. I gratefully think of you each time I take my coupe out on only dry sunny days as the master recommends.

Maybe Blumax, rather than risque, is more Yoda like?

Happy Birthday and many, many more.

Ross

Thanks to all for the Birthday Greetings--its hard to embrace the reality of the "Big 80"--but my plan now is to keep on Couping for as long as I can continue to push the left, middle and right pedals down--and hear "Music of Munich" or as we used to say--the great sounds of a poor mans Ferrari.

There is a story about the well earned name BLUMAX--
Dunno about writing a book--but co-incidentally that has come up a couple of times recently--ED--the name is not intended to "be in the face"--rather--37 years ago shortly after buying same I would fondly call him "MAX" as an appropriate German masculine name--then at times I would call him "BLUE"--as that is his color--then along came wife #2 and shortly thereafter here in California we had our personalized plates expand to allow 7 digit names and she was able to get BLUMAX1--the original BLUMAX plate was hanging on another car owned we believe by the owner of a car wax company by that name that was then available here in California--he had acquired the original 6 digit plate--sooo--the car wax company is gone but BLUMAX1--the real one lives on--proudly wearing his blue and gold plates that were issued in those times--wife #2 is also gone with another family Coupe we had once upon a time--but no tears.

Some day when I learn how to post pictures I'll share the old boy--BLUMAX--with all to see how well a relentlessly "cared for Coupe" has fared--and still looks and is--after 410,000 miles.

#2 drove it in the rain...didn't she? Funny how they make it easy to break up with. I'm lucky I've only had 1 of those, but I digress. Just pulling your leg with the lame BLUMAX quip. It's the best name on the board, a far cry from some of the girly-girl names from others.....my .02....Chime in boys!

BTW I am temporarily naming mine- KNUCKLEBUSTER.....Take that ladies!

Happy Birthday

Murray,

Happy Birthday!

I have always enjoyed reading your comments and opinions over the years. And having lived once close to where you are (I lived in Newport Beach during the 80’s), I can relate very well to your stories.

Many happy returns and if you’re ever back east, Connecticut, I would love to get together and hear some of those great memories in person.

Best regards, John Raho
