More Tariff Madness

Just landed in Paris. I’m collecting parts I have bought in Europe over the last month and packing them in big suitcases to take home. UPS just shut down my account for not paying a $500.00 tariff
Sounds like a little Jimmy Buffet tune would fit right here...

He went to Paris,
looking for old parts
To fit cars from so long ago...
Tariffs may thwart him
But these are important
So he's bringing them in on his own.

As the tariffs grow it will be cheaper to vacation in Europe, collect parts and fly home. But I do take great comfort, no solace, knowing the tariffs are helping make America great again.

I could not resist, the Devil made me do it. How long will I be shunned and cast into the outer darkness? Guess I will appeal all the way to the Supreme Court. Ooops, there I go again. My fingers are possessed!

Unfortunately it is not cheaper to vacation in Europe because the exchange rate is way up as a result of...well, this nonsense.

Right Boonies, but I would still rather give my weakling dollars to the French for a great croissant and expresso in a lovely cafe on the Left, politically correct, Bank.

Right there with you @CSteve , we were in Paris for the new year this year and look forward to going back. It will cost more, but like you I would rather spend it there than fork it over to UPS.

i don't get it. i ordered 434 euro plus shipping. UPS said i had a 51 euro tariff due. i went online to pay it, and i was only asked to pay 39 euro ... which i did. package arrived, no extra asked for.

All in how it’s classified Scott. If there is ambiguity they just slap the biggest tariff they can assess on it. The problem lies in the fact that getting to change it is seemingly impossible… you can’t get to the right people.

The seals I got from Stefan… no problem at all.

At this point the only way I can see to get through to them is to either refuse it or perhaps talk to the delivery guy and see if he has a better contact.

Problem is… supposed to be delivered tomorrow… I’m out of town collecting my non tariffed engine ;)

Looks like the tariff is $139 on a $250 purchase, plus an arbitrary $59 "brokerage fee" which is the charge UPS must be adding for the extra crap they have to deal with in collecting tariffs at delivery. Also appears that theyare charging duty onthe shipping charge, which makes no sense either...

This amounts to about a 50% tariff, which is ridiculous since the EU tariff is supposed to be 15%, plus the arbitrary brokerage fee.

Silly too, since there are NO US SUPPLIERS for these parts, so no US industry is benefitting. Just more stupidity on the part of the US government...

Why not find out what the cheapest import code that car parts will fall under that will work with the custom guys and ask the shippers to use that code When I was bringing up parts for a business that I was managing from the US, I became my own broker and the customs official told me what code to use to cover all different range of parts Used that code to import parts for quite a few years , no hassles

Thanks, Rick

If you look at WN’s invoice. They do mark it VERY boldly that it is classic car parts. They even have the correct tariff code on it.

For some reason which is inexplicable… UPS is ignoring this.

I contacted W-N. To their credit they explained that steel and aluminum parts are tariffed at 50% and 25% respectively. They then provided a letter explaining which parts were steel, and thus subject to the 50% tariff. They also sent contact info at UPS to get this straightened out.

Only three parts are steel. The rest are plastic and rubber.

Should cut the tariff down by about 50% from what UPS was charging. It remains to be seen is UPS persists in adding a $60 "brokerage fee"...

i was under the impression that steel / aluminum tariff was for raw steel / aluminum, not something like a steel body panel or some aluminum piece that was manufactured into another part. this is something that is worth checking into as it has a significant impact on what we pay as tariff ... and would be great information for W+N
