Rohan!
This article in the "Motorsport" issue from January 1973 is one of my favourite CSL-articles. The Golf RHD city pack CSL (equipped with a periodic Alpina front spoiler) was provided by BMW Concessionaires (GB) Ltd.
It started day one from Paul Street in London (UK) and continued to Paris, Monte Carlo, Rome, Vienna, Bern, Bonn, Luxembourg, Brussels, Amsterdam and back again to London. All in all, on four days. A Total mileage of 3 789 was driven and effective drive-time was 24,35 hours.
The full "Motorsport" magazine is for sale via ebay UK:

But my favourite CSL-article is the famous one from "Rallye Racing", January 1974, where a a tall German test pilot, dressed in a Russian-style fur hat and black-tinted sunglasses, is testing a Polaris Bat under full winter conditions (including 20-30 cm of snow).
Was it really better in the past?
Good luck with your European trip and please provide your planning if you go-ahead. I'm pretty sure we could arrange some european CSLs that could meet you when you are visiting "our countries".
Cheers
