I have one because my e9 is outside and it needs a paint job. Aren't car covers known for scratching the paint?

depends on the material of the liner, or inner liner if it has one, and how windy it is where you park, u.s.w.
I buy cheap fleece lined ones and throw them out when they finally get dirty inside, about a year. When you pull the cover off and the car is dirtier than when you covered it, it's time.

I usually wash or dust my coupe before using a cover but it is and indoor cover for inside the garage
