They do steal coupes.

If nothing else- put an AirTag in the defrost vent.

I bet that was their first metal steering column. Good news is that even if they got it started they wouldn’t have made it out of first gear.

On prevention: Ignition cutoff switch, Club, AirTag, GPS tracking?

AirTags apparently make noise after a certain amount of time, so maybe throw in the trunk or exterior somewhere. They also can alert you to their presence if they aren't paired to your device, - to avoid stalkers and car thieves, so you may need to place one in an obvious spot and hide one well.

I worked in downtown San Francisco for 25 years and watch the goings on from afar now. News about crime in SF is not good, and this is more of the same and a damn shame.

Such a shame what has happened to that city. And your friend's car, of course. What disgusting people...

So the question also is.......if you reported it, did anyone care? I ask casue we met a family from Seattle while at my son's graduation in NY. They told us their car was stolen out of their driveway and when they reported it, they were told that since their was no injury/assault etc, that they would log it but not do much about it. I cannot believe that could be true.

I've lived in California my whole life, but always in the South Bay. The only time I've ever had a car touched was in NorCal (Santa Cruz). Not sure why but it's different up there. I too wonder what they would've done with it. Just a joyride because it's pretty? Seems difficult and yet conspicuous. Parting it out would require special knowledge/connections. It isn't a Civic Type R. Makes no sense to me, not that criminals always make sense....

The vast majority of cars stolen on the west coast are recovered in like 3 days. Minimal damage, messy interior. The chop shop days have kind of come and gone, dave for catalytic converters.

Here is a good snapshot of the macro picture. My daughter's Cabrio soft top suffered a similar fate in SF, and I had to redo leather seats that were covered in blood from the perpetrator also cutting himself while cutting the top...

Let’s turn this thread into another thinly veiled political debate on law enforcement and public policy!

That’s a real shame. Sadly these people seem to feel entitled. I’m amazed they went through so much effort. I really wish there could be real consequences for this. Thankfully the car was recovered.

there is no common sense with break-in thieves. everybody knows there is no lock on the glove box in a 2002. so what did they do when they broke in to steal my radio ... they took a crow bar to the glove box and cracked my dash. go figure. of course they also yanked out the vent window to get in ... and NO the car wasn't locked ... neither was the trunk ... but they didn't even open that - there were tools back there.

The difficult thing is both deterring thieves in the first place, i.e. make it obvious that it's hard to steal, and actually making it difficult to steal. If you do the latter, like adding a kill switch somewhere, you might just be inviting more damage. It's a conundrum.
