That’s part of the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system and isn’t needed if you don’t need a smog test, cap those lines off. One goes to back of your exhaust manifold.

i found the egr valve (same as p1800).. what does this part do? is it used on any other models?

"what does this part do?"

EGR means exhaust gas recirculation. It reduces NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions in vehicles so they can meet US EPA and the more stringent California air quality standards for NO2 (nitrogen dioxide). NOx turns in to NO2 as it leaves the tail pipe and mixes with the outside air. But, basically, the EGR valve redirects some of the exhaust gasses back in to the air intake stream, which then reduces the air intake oxygen concentration resulting in lower combustion temperatures. So, less oxygen = less fuel burned = lower combustion temperatures = less NOx. But, lower combustion temperatures = more hydrocarbons (aka, soot particles). So there's also an environmental and health disbenefit to EGR. Not to mention soot is bad for engines.

"is it used on any other models?"

yup. Since 1972, or 74 or 77, I don't recall, the national standards kept getting delayed. But the model of vehicle is less of a determining factor than where it was imported to and when. My e9 doesn't have EGR, but it was built and imported to the US in early 1972; the same year that EGR and the federal NOx standards were "developed", albeit not fully implemented until later. My car also wasn't imported to California, where it may have been outfitted with california emissions controls because NOx standards had been in place since the 1960s.

my car is a 1973 and was first imported in North carolina..
I was able to find a new ear valve and i am getting the vapor recovery cartridge fixed..that way i will be able to keep all the original piping..it would be interesting to find out if this type of cartridge was installed on any other car. I doubt that this was only developed by BMW for bmw...mercedes and mgb seem to have a different system..

I knew that looked familiar. Had some form of this on our California 67 mustang. Needless to say, it is there in memory only now.

The part pictured is the exhaust gas filter for the EGR. Here is a cross reference for the part:

thanks..unfortunately this part is not available new.. I contacted some vendor in europe to see if i can get a good used one..
