I read on the forum that you should roll your windows down when you lift your car from a safe lifting point. This seams like a myth to me but can anyone comment? I am just lifting with a floor jack to take off a tire
I went to the doctor today, and asked about something, and he said what I will tell you..."it couldn't hurt..."
I'm sure that its a chassis-flex issue, but if it was that bad, you probably shouldn't jack it up anyway. I say don't worry about it...but then, I didn't go to med school...
I don’t know anyone who has broken a window lifting or jacking up their car. You hear people say (on facebook) that they will never put their e9 on a lift, and they get “bent out of shape” that way. These folks don’t know how steel works.
I’ve heard so called coupe experts (in Colorado) say that jacking up an e9 is a good way to see if the rockers are bad. That is so silly that I took a video of my car being jacked, and the showed the nearly missing rocker.
I had a jeep cherokee (XJ) for about 20 years. When I took it off-roading I would hold onto the drip rail. The chassis would flex so much that the door would pinch my fingers. Everything goes back to normal at the end of the trail. That jeep got rear ended, bending the frame rails. I bought the car back and had it pulled as straight as $500 would get me. Enjoyed it for another 5 years before making room for the e9.
Do it every day for ten years and you will have stress fractures. Not unlike bending a wire or sheet metal back and forth to cut it. Steel is very forgiving. It is one reason why the US so many steel bridges that are way past their lifespan that haven’t been replaced. They will fail catastrophically at some point however.
I can jack the car up and open and close doors with no issues. Enjoy your coupe but don’t worry about every little thing. p.s. I’ve driven it in a downpour and it survived.
Jacking up on one side only for a tire change may produce some flex, noticeable by that door possibly being a little tighter than normal when opening and closing. I’ve never had an issue with glass.
I recall reading that in the old paper E9 Newsletter years ago about the window getting bound so the door wouldn't open. The condition of the Coupe & how it was specifically lifted, as I recall, were not in the article.
If one places the lift arms on the front frame rails & rear subframe. There should not be any issue with windows or doors.
