I have scanned the threads on starter replacement. It seems the Bosch SR441X is the preferred unit.

Also are there different versions if the SR441X as the searched say to make sure that the one you get has a permanent magnet motor and has the small body?

But we are unsure in the searches that it will fit on our stock 1970 2800CS with original Zeniths and manifolds, because of some interference with that configuration..

Also our car does have the ballast resistor and the searches indicate there is some wiring changes when using the SR441X.

Any advice would be appreciated. We want to get the right started on the engine before it goes back in the car.

Thanks

It is the perfect starter for both carb and injected cars, I just put one in my 73 with Zeniths and my b35 had this starter as well. It does not have a ballast resistor bypass feature like the original SR71 but it is not needed as it spins so much faster. The SR71 used the 12:00 terminal to bypass the ballast, on the SR441X that terminal is always hot, don’t use it. I think there are small case versions of the SR71X but I would not risk it.

Thanks for the info, but I'm having trouble finding one. Seems everyone is out of stock. I want to buy locally so I get credit for the core, even NAPA says cannot get them and don't know when will be available. Otherwise if buy online, I believe one is charged a core charge unless ship the core to them.

Anyone have a source at present?

Thanks

It is worth it to return the core, I found mine earlier this year through Pelican Parts, it was in Texas so yes they are hard to find.

Rebuilt ones are fine. These can be found with descriptions for the 2002 or M3, same one fits. And has Don has pointed out, when mounted the solenoid is lower on the case than others which sit on top and can interfere with the manifold.

I think Amazon is worth looking at

and ebay

rareelectrical has sold 300,000 starters

102 bucks is a great price...

My search fingers ain't what they used to be.

I did a search on SR441X both on eBay and Amazon and did not find these links.

THANKS as will take a chance on one of these as they appear to be a rebuilt clone of a rebuilt Bosch unit. But for that price, I'LL give it a go especially with Amazon for free shipping. The one we have was working fine but since car is all apart for restoration, and what a pain it is to replace when in the car, decided to replace it.

441 and 442 good for carbs- I think its the 444 that doesn't work on carbs

I've ordered the one from Amazon. Free shipping, here in time to put under the tree (well palm trees here!).

Anyone have any experience with the vendor rare-electrical?

For that price I am assuming is a knock off rebuild of a Bosch, but may very well be in an initial Bosch shell.

Worth the possible risk.

Thanks

Update

Received starter from Amazon today that is suppose to be from Rareelectrical. Looks like a new one , but may be rebuilt. Sure looks like the pics of a Bosch SR441X. Made in China so I do not actually believe its rebuilt. There is no reference to Bosch SR441X on box or starter. Only the 17237N on the unit and box. The rareelctrical web site search reveals after a search looking for the words SR441X.

Seems to fit, will bolt on engine thats sitting on the floor attached to tranny. Will test in next few week when try to build oil prz on motor.

Here is the photo on new an old.

Thanks for all the info.
