I had a similar issue when in CA for the Monterey Car week. Turns out a plug wire was loose; I had accidentally loosened it doing other work. A damaged plug wire could cause similar problems.

If the plug wires are properly seated, check that the resistance of each wire is consistent. As Barry notes, another way to check this is to look at the consistency of the color of the plugs.

What carbs? If downdrafts, and if connected, check the anti-dieseling solenoid.

I posted this in the past as a thing to check for odd running problems. When they fail the solenoid pin sometimes pops in and out creating a fuel cut on the primary circuit. It mimics an electrical issue.

-edit- I see the carbs are downdrafts. Look for a single wire running to the carb. You should be able to check / test the solenoid by pulling the wire on and off with power at the wire (key turned, engine off).
