Need manual transmission flywheel with magnet sensor pickup for m30b35 engine swap and ecu

I have a mechanic who is performing a m30b35 engine swap on my 3.0 cs. I had an automatic 1986 BMW 735i donor which he pulled the m30b35 engine and ecu for the swap. He also has the getrag 265 5 speed transmission in place but with the donor ecu, he is not able to get a spark. He claims he needs a 1985/86 manual transmission flywheel with the magnetic sensor pickup in order to get a spark.

Is he correct? Can I use the 735i ecu and where can I get a flywheel with the sensor to get things working? I appreciate any help.

A few things:

1. A 1986 735 is not a M30B35, it is a M30B34, unless it has been replaced. The B35 got Motronic 1.3, which uses a front crank position sensor off the harmonic balancer.
2. The 1986 735 runs Motronic 1.0, which uses a bellhousing pickup for the crank position, which is what your mechanic is talking about. This thread (https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/h...y-coupe-5sp-3-5-conversion.38810/#post-333641) shows a picture or two of the Motronic 1.0 flywheel.
3. Did the 5-speed they used have the correct bellhousing with the crank position sensor cutouts?

This one on ebay (not my auction) looks like it will work, and it has the Motronic feature:

Thanks for the info. I did get the bellhousing with the crank position sensor cutouts.

None of this makes sense unless you came upon a rare 1986 euro e32 engine and if that’s the case you would use a front crank sensor. Most likely you have a b34 USA engine. BTW- x atlas0 is giving you great advice and a clear description.
You have my phone #- call me if you want to talk about this.

My mistake, it is a m30b34.

I hate to say it, but what's the goal of the swap? The stock B34 is somewhat of a dog due to low CR, intake manifold port sizing, and cam. The B35 (running M1.3) is significantly better in every regard, and is effectively the same cost. If you are just trying to get the car running, I guess it makes some sense, but if you're trying to get your money's worth, a different engine (particularly the B35) would get you substantially improved performance.

At a minimum if you decide to use that stock m30b34 engine- you need a set of 10:1 pistons, euro cam, a euro computer and a euro harness.

Better is a mild street cam and 10:1 pistons and a Megasquirt.

Otherwise- just get a stock m30b35 setup or a 733 engine.

What you are doing is installing the worst choice out of 5 possible engines.

Call me if want to swap a b35 for your b34?

check row52 for an engine in Fairfield, an engine in Salinas, Newark, Windsor etc.

Here's one that just came out in Rocklin - B35 with a 5-speed and the right holes for motor mounts.

I have one, I’m in Monterey. I wish I had seen this sooner since I was in San Francisco today.

The Tadich! Old school. Used to work across the street from Tadich. The prices were ridiculous so it was a rare lunch spot but the burgers were great...

Still ridiculously expensive; but it's a once in a blue moon treat. We don't get to the city that often and their cioppino is excellent. The nostalgia is great too!
