I need the following parts. Any ideas would be appreciated:
  1. new antenna - mine is fine, other than the white plastic piece inside is broken disconnected from the thing that pulls it in/out. My shop told me I needed a new antenna, and the plastic piece apparently could not be sourced separately. Not a big deal as I don't use the antenna anyway, but would be cool if it could go up/down
  2. new cable set for eBrake. Per my shop, they said they couldn't source it.
  3. Jets for my carbs. My shop didn't refer to them as Jets, but said the small piece for carbs needs to be replaced so just assuming that is what he is referring to.
thanks.

Sounds like you have an electric antenna, if so, you just need a new antenna mast, easy to replace. Unless the motor is kaput you don't need to replace the entire thing

Handbrake cables may be hard to find

Have to be far more specific on the jets need way more info what carbs are you running? what size? which jets? what size are already in there? what is the issue to start with ?

Thanks, Rick

If your shop calls carb jets "the small piece for carbs" do NOT let them near the carbs.... Or any other engine related issue....
agree. welcome to my world. I think it was a language issue. Do the jets get dirty and need to be REPLACED vs. cleaned? I told them specifically not to mess with the carbs, but they tried anyway...

Scott - you are becoming a soap opera here.

A buddy of mine, who is a world class mechanic, used to tell people who came to him complaining about work previously done by others to go back to them and make them correct their mistakes. When, as often happened, they failed to to so, Roger would refuse their work.

I'll say this one more time, and then I'm done. Find a good mechanic, trust him and pay him what he is worth. If he is not within a short drive from where you live, suck it up and go to where you find someone who can do the job. This notion that you can hire incompetent people because they are convienient and later ask for help here when it goes bad (surprise, suprise) is getting really tedious.

Where do you take your 911 for service? If you have a good 911 shop, they should be able good enough for basic E9 drivetrain and mechanical needs.

Carburetor: a “jet” a machined part which regulates the flow of fuel, air, or a mixture of the two substances thru precision calibrated orifices

Jets fail when they
(1) get dirty, in which case they just need to be cleaned … hopefully not by an idiot because improper cleaning can ruin the calibration of a jet

(2) get worn out or damaged by abuse, in which case they should be replaced.

If you have either the original Zenith carbs or a Weber conversion (32/36 or 38/38), there are MANY jets in each carbs.

If you have Weber carbs, and the shop can’t source needed parts directly, I would be very wary of letting the shop do any further work in the car. I say this because there are a MULTITUDE of places to source new Weber carb parts and instructions, all of which are easy to find, and most of which provide technical support to shops.

John

PS: if you don’t have any good repair shops in your area, and you won’t send your car to an E9 expert for a full end-2- restoration and thorough debugging (VSR, LaJolla, etc), then perhaps you need to just live with the shit service you have in your area, or get a more modern classic?

PPS: if there is a local shop that specializes in older VW’s, they should have enough knowledge to work on any Weber carb.

If you're not finding good help locally, maybe Twin Falls is not too far away?

There are lots of small pieces on carbs, I suggest you find out exactly what he was referring to before buying a bunch of jets.

I’m not sure what you mean by tedious. If you mean tedious for @scottevest then I agree. If you mean responding to questions on the forum, you can always chose to ignore @scottevest. Personally, I would like to encourage all members to post whatever questions they have regardless of how many times it has been asked, or how trivial it may appear.

Scott is asking where to find parts and how to fix pertinent issues. Meanwhile, the rest of us are talking about:
  • alpina engravings on the back of the wheel
  • alpina engravings on the front of the wheel
  • alpina logos on the front of the wheel
  • alpina spoke colors
  • alpina center colors
