there was a black '72 auto in santa barbara that was listed, bidding was at 11.9k and the auction went away with the reserve not met.

I grab every good one I can find. I had my friend who lives in Santa Barabra at his door at 9:00AM........So..............Yes.........

I contacted him within 30 mins of this ebay listing, but his "reserve" was $15k. A bit high for the concrete info I had on it at the time; not having any contacts on the ground in the area. Listed at around $19.9k for a few months on their actual website from what I could gather.

I have been looking far and wide for months for a solid daily driver e9 that I can feel good about purchasing (by being reliable and holding its value long term). Seems like a lot of speculators are purchasing them quickly solely to flip for a profit in the short term. Please leave one good example for us drivers to purchase, enjoy, and share with our younger enthusiasts!

i don't think Mark (ny30cs) is quick flipping, but he is buying every decent coupe that goes on the market and he is reselling them at a higher price - sometimes significantly. his post is right under yours. check out www.huntingridgemotors.com

Tightbox, I feel your pain. I'm looking hard as well and Mark snagged a very nice one right out of my backyard the day before I was set to go check it out.

Should we tell Mark that the "Original Black" E9 was originally Green?...

According to the seller in Tennessee who offered the car a while back the car was originally Metallic Green not black...

Looks very good in photos buy a few who saw it in Tennessee were not impressed...

random thoughts about CS ownership

Yes there is a sickness. My coupe comes home from the paint shop where a great deal of painstaking work restored the body to its original beauty. A lot of expense went into areas unseen. The thought was to ensure the car looks as good years from now.

I see the ads and wonder, hmmm maybe get a cheap CS to drive around and not worry about. Sickness?

Then there is the issue of price and value. Are we all too harsh on the owners selling their coupes? Are they actually worth more than we think and we keep their prices down by our heavy scrutiny? I don't know. They are, after all limited production cars. The E30 M3 steadily rises in price and the 507 is off the charts. Do you think the CS will "catch fire"?

The only reason the E9 stumbles value-wise is because of the engine. All the rust talk goes right out the window and doesn't matter if the motor were more sexy.

The truth is that the M30 at that time was so good there was no reason to have a special "hot-rod" version for the E9. Yeah, you had carbs vs. injection, but it's not the stuff that legend is made of.

If the E9 had some sort of special, exotic, limited-production, hard-to-live-with, take-your wallet-hostage engine, the values would be significantly higher.

Hello Tightbox,
I would imagine you are referring to me in your post. First off, I am thankful every day that I get to make a living doing something I love. I am first and foremost an enthusiast and secondly a businessman. I sell cars that I love in order to feed my family and to support my racing habit. I am proud of the cars I sell and take time and go through painstaking measures to make them as good as possible while still making a profit. It's the American way. You always have the option of buying one from me when I am done with them knowing that they are fully sorted and have been gone through as best as possible. The economics of the business come into play. I'd love nothing more than to completely take apart every one I buy and to restore them to their former glory. I also love the fact that these cars lend themselves to some type of personalizing with wheels, spoilers, steering wheels and other sorts of modifications ( if done in good taste ) that do not detract from the value of the car. I was heavily involved with Lotus cars for very much the same reason. It allows, I guess for some sort of artistic expression. In any event, I think it's a good thing to find one that is still solid and to preserve it. Yes, I have come across some unscrupulous dealers that turn my stomach but I hope that you do not put us all together in one big dealer low life category.
I am also a member of this forum and take great pride in my personal 3.0CS. I carry the banner and sing the praise of these cars for all of us. Yes, if I make a profit while doing that, I hope you don't find that too offensive. I think Enzo made money also to support his racing. Mine is on a MUCH smaller scale.
Regards, Mark

To CookeD,

Rare exotic = CSL
BMW service shops = take your walet hostage

To ny30cs,
Curious if this is this same car as the black CS

Lots of fishiness with this one last time around.

Yes, these cars are worth more.
How is it an Isetta could be worth more.

I am not sure. There is no VIN # to reference. I know the car I bought has leather interior. I had a friend look at it and he answered all the important questions with the correct answers. I am not worried about much more than that. Luckily I am in a position to remedy almost any evil. I am sure when I am done with the car it will meet most discerning buyers needs. None are perfect. Most need TONS of attention and then there are the members here who care for and bring the best out of the ones they own and love. The condition of the Coupes I have come across vary greatly and so do the prices. You get what you pay for most of the time. The hard part with these cars is not to pay too much for the bad ones or the ones that need lots of attention. It pays to pay up a bit for the ones that have been sorted. My thoughts anyway.

Wow, 16.8k on the fairly rusty Fjord car. Seller uses the term "unrestored" a few times in the ad, then later mentions a repaint, rechrome, and a new interior. When did an older restoration that needs updating become synonymous with unrestored condition?

tightbox….I feel your pain. I to have a limited budget and can’t keep up with the dealers who have deep pockets.
I just want a nice daily driver that I can enjoy.
I don’t fault ny30cs business practices he does have to make a living but it is very difficult for us to compete in this tight market.
Yes, I could buy a car off ny30cs however as he stated he will go through the cars and fix what he deems necessary, after this process is done the cars prices are now way over my budget.
I will just keep looking and hope something will come along.
No malice was intended against anyone on this site, we are all on this site for the same reason, the promotion and survival of the E9

Dreamerfore9, I suggest you try a search engine like Autotempest and load in a west coast zip code. Auto Tempest searches multiple sites and craigslist. You need to be pretty vigilant on the searching. It took me more than a year to find my car, and I had given up on it when someone here posted a link to an interesting car for sale.(Thanks TodB) Next step if it pass the initial photos and seller explanation is to put a refundable deposit on it to hold it till you can have it inspected or make your way out to see it. At this point it is difficult to detach yourself from the emotional aspect and walk away after you have invested time , money and effort. Another tip might be to tell Bring a Trailer to put you on their BMW specific email list. Sometimes a great deal comes up on that forum. You should also consider a European import as their economy looks so Bleak at the moment. Might be some great E9's shaken out of the trees. (check Mobil.de)

Anyway, it worked for me. Best of luck.
