Hello all. New member here with a 1973 3.0CSi. Fjord Blue with a blue velour interior. Purchased used by my uncle in Naples, Italy in the mid 1980s while serving in the US Navy. I assume it was orginally an Italian delivery car. I've got a couple scattered receipts and registrations from previous owners.

Imported to the US in 1988-89. I have some pretty good documentation of both the import and federalization process that my uncle undertook as a returning service member. I can scan and post some of that if useful to the community.

I've been lurking a bit and I'm impressed with the knowledge and culture here. As you might expect, I have a ton of questions and will try to keep those somewhat organized in separate threads.

Here's my general goals:

  1. Get it running. It has been at least 2 years, maybe 5 at worst since it last ran. No specific known issues, just his passing and some time unknown before that.
    1. Oil changed. Installed the spin on adapter from Ireland Engineering.
    2. New battery.
    3. New plugs on the way.
    4. Probably plug wires. It's currently a mismatched set with 1 the original style terminal and 2-6 with the more typical terminal style, not sure what that means...
    5. Old gas TBD. Not sure how bad, may need to siphon.
    6. .... and everything else that could possibly be wrong I'm sure.
  2. Get it driving..
    1. Tires: date code from 2002, will get new ones. 14" BMW Alpina style wheels. Any reccomendations?
    2. Brakes: Haven't looked closely, but pads and rotors likely good. Receipts for a pair of rotors and pads in ~2016, not many miles since. He would have done the others at the same time if they needed it.
    3. Brake fluid: Topped off to bring back to min level, will flush completely. The reservoir is missing the float and strainer, I need to dig into that. Maybe other issues in the brake system TBD. Probably gets its own thread.
    4. PS fluid: Haven't looked, will flush with new filter.
    5. .... and everything else that could possibly be wrong I'm sure.
  3. General fluid flush and maintenance.
  4. Clean up/undo some of the federalization stuff.
    1. I believe the orginal Pebra keyed ignition was swapped with a later BMW one just to make the "key in ignition" buzzer easier? I have the original (I think). Or maybe it was replaced for other reasons. This may end poorly. There's a buzzer flopping around in the hood reelase compartment. Or maybe that's for the fasten seatbelt....
    2. There's a fasten sealtbelt light tacked on (actually a VW part I think). This can go.
    3. It has full orange Euro front signal lenses... with a chunk of orange reflector glued inside to federalize. They've since cracked. I have NOS Sidler US orange lenses, but they are... less svelte shall we say. Not sure what I want to do here. Perfect world I'd do the Italian style. The reflectors are the 21W P25-1 european style, but they have 2 filament bulbs installed. Need to dig into this further, but probably rewired from the city light? Should post a new thread.
    4. Headlights are US sealed beams. I plan to go back to an ECE setup, just need to figure out how the wiring was adpated, if at all. Seems like the Hella H4 and H1 pairs are the path of least resistance?
  5. Clean up/undo some of the original Italian "extras"
    1. There's a partial Frigette AC system... Probably gets its own thread.
    2. There's an antifurto elettronico... I think it's no longer doing anthing. Probably gets stripped out completely, hopefully wasn't too much hacking when installed.
  6. Needs a radio.
  7. Needs a shift knob and boot... maybe make the clock work...
  8. ... and all the things.
Glad to be a part or the community and looking forward to the journey ahead.

Welcome to the e9 Forum. You can get a lot of Information, help, tips, addresses and motivation to get your car up and running.

H4 lamps and bulbs don’t belong in coupes
Understood. Is there a good (with less than extortionate pricing) source for low/dipped beam H1s? Daniel Stern has a JIS and ECE version but both are listed as "High". Not finding much else. For what it's worth, I installed "E Codes" on my MkIV VW Jetta back in 2005 or so. H7s and the beam pattern were a noticable improvement. Plus the cool city lights vs DRLs. Also added the leveling motors. Never wired up the rear fog. Or the "single side parking lights".

Figured this out. It still has the original dignostic harness with the induction loop around the #1 wire. Whoever replaced the plug wires didn't want to mess with that apparently. Maybe original wire #1? The round tube for the bundle is missing, wires 2-6 (Mallory brand) were flopped along the side of the bay. Replace with a square tube Karlyn/Bremi wire set? It's not exactly a concours bound specimen...

If you are looking to go new wires I think Kingsbourne's are the best (were they bought out?) I'd be interested in buying the diagnostic harness from you if you'd like, I am running one on mine and would entertain sourcing a backup.

Welcome!

We're very keen to see some pictures.
Nice story, and great that you can continue driving your uncle's car.

You have quite a nice list of things to fiddle with.

Hope you're driving soon.
Whenever you're in doubt, do post.
We love a good challenge.

Hello and welcome. I recommend doing all the belts, cooling system hoses and brake hoses immediately.

I would drain the old gas and inspect the inside of the tank. I had a bunch of rust in my gas tank when I bought my car. It sat for five years before I bought it. Its not worth running a bunch of crap through your fuel system to save a few dollars.

Yes, bought out by Wagner. The online catalog seems somewhat generic, but maybe they are still the same parts. I dodn't dig too far into it, ended up ordering the Karlyn/STI/Bremi assembly, thanks to sfdon and others for the confirmation.

Thanks! Noted on the belts and hoses, I have some receipts to sort through. May be relatively recent for at least some of them. Cooling system ones seem pretty supple. Haven't pulled the wheels yet. Fuel... half tank. Will figure out how to siphon/drain. Just one more variable to eliminate, right?
