New member help! in Compression test results purchase decision needed

My car produced similar compression results. I plan to tear the whole thing down and rebuild, and I don't know why the numbers were low. But similar setup - weber side drafts, plugs out, warm engine, runs fine despite compression numbers. I fantasized that my gauge is bad - and maybe that is the case. My results 1 through 6:
123, 126, 129, 138, 124, 129
Good luck with the PPI!

Reporting from Oregon - I can report that the car did not show any signs of low compression. Cold start was immediate and with just a tad of smoke from choke start up. No white smoke. Then we removed the valve cover oil cap to see if there was any sign of blow back and nothing. Then the warm test drive. Hard acceleration and no smoke. Then high rev engine braking, nothing. Then observing multiple engine pulls from different rev ranges and the car had strong acceleration. That exhausted all of the ideas from you guys, my engineer neighbor and I. We are guessing that the shop that did the compression test had poor devices. The gages hadn’t been used in over 10 years.

Craterface, I watched your video and did the same technique with my phone. Cell phones are the perfect shape to get into that space. So great news there very clean. Thanks for providing the nudge to get those areas viewed. I have photos of CoupeKing’s restoration work with the sills shown.

Now there are a couple nit pick items. BMW isn’t fallible in their design. But for me this is one of the finest CS coupes I’ve seen in 30 years. Keep in mind that I’ve only seen a few coupes in the flesh over the same period. If this is Hagerty # 2-/3+ I’d sure like to see what a 1 looks like. I didn’t want to show my excitement before finalizing a deal.

I’m happy to report that I’m cash poorer and coupe richer. Tomorrow I pick up the trailer and load her up and carefully haul her back home. Pictures to follow when I get home.

Thanks for all the advice and support.

Oh thank god! I don’t know if I could take any more of your Goldilocks and the Three Bears comments on BaT. This one is too rusty. This one is too pricey.

This one is juuuust right! :D Looking forward to updates! Start a project thread to tackle the small stuff. We can wallow in the details!

Ok - here are a couple photos. I didn't want to jinx the purchase with posting photos before getting a done deal. I needed to inspect the car in person before deciding and just wanted to be able to walk away if something didn't feel right. So after a 1000 mile round trip drive I'm home and can reply and post a couple images. Let me know if you guys want to see anything in particular. I'll have a couple small items to work on, but I don't think anything major.

In the photo of the engine bay, the wind shield wipers are missing. Glad to see no tar sound deadening on the strut towers.
The three photos make it look pretty turn-key. Reminds me of HBChris's Coupe.

Any other photos?

There are additional photos at AutoManiaGP.com. There you will also find links to CoupeKing's webpage on the car and work they did as well. I'm still recuperating from the trip. I've got to return the trailer to Uhaul now.

Thanks gentlemen. I've lusted for one of these for 45 years. This car, in this exact color was the first BMW I had ever driven. I picked one up at the San Jose dealer, drove home to my parents place to show my father. I was trying to get him to buy it for his salesman car. But it was too expensive. But the next year I did convince him to buy a 1975 2002 in mintgrun color with tan interior. I just remembered, back then these cars were scarce. My dad had two color choices mintgrun or malaga and the interior was "whatever" arrives. The same for having a sunroof. No dealer custom orders. You took what you could get. Anyway that was my introduction to BMW's. I also had a high school friend who's father had a 3.0Si. I thought the sedans were all Bavaria's, but I was wrong. He took me for a couple rides, and I was shocked at the handling and his four wheel drifting around corners. Scared the crap out of me. But that was when I learned of the Ultimate Driving Machine. I've been a die hard BMW fan ever since. When my father's lease was up, I purchased the car and from there everything else is history. I've been in the CCA for the same 45 years. I should get a free life time membership. Shoot I've paid for 50 years worth of membership.

Andrew, I did get windshield wipers with the deal. It was a hard and difficult negotiation. Now if I can only figure out the stereo and the keyless entry system. I can't lock the car - or I haven't figured out how to do that. I can't even turn the key in the driver side lock. PPI folks don't check for those things apparently. Two PPI groups mine and the previous buyer who decided not to purchase without a personal visit. A NY to Southern Oregon trip which didn't make sense to his wife. Well that and he didn't have a garage for it. This car's lived a pampered life since the restoration.

You must have a very low BMW CCA number like Joseph Chamberlain, he chose 7. Michael Izor is 200-something. Anyone with lower than 10,000 is affectionately referred to as a "Beezer", coined by Joseph.

Glad they included the wipers. So there are electric locks with a key fob?

Strange the ignition key doesn't work on the door locks.
My coupe had a failing ignition switch for a few years. Before it gave out completely, I purchased a new lockset from Walloth-Nesch. Comes with 2 sets of 2 keys, ignition switch, both door locks & a trunk lock.

I don’t lock my car, don’t want the broken window or the screwdrivered door. I disable it with a kill switch and now the 123 distributor disable feature. And keep nothing in it. Same with the trunk.
