Have owned a CSL and driven a couple of lightweight RS... in fact, passed on a well known example in 1994 offered for $32,000.

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I have two woulda-shoulda's: that RS and a pair of 904's (with spares out the wazoo) in 1974 for $6500 bucks.

A good CSL is a blast to drive fast... a lightweight RS is a revelation. That they were direct competitors is a myth.

BMW brought in Neerspasch because of his success with Ford's Capri program. THAT was their target.

Nice article, but Octane did this before. In 2005 they did the same comparisation with more depth, and pictures are taken at the beautiful Spa raceway. Quite nice to read the values in 2005, to compare these with the current values.

Yea, theres not much of a comparison between the two. A 911 is a special drive. The CSL is fun but not anywhere near the same level of fun, tossability or sheer quickness. Coupe is really just a beautiful GT car.

having taken a ride around Barber Motorsports track in a racing CSL, there is a ton of difference in a true race car on a smooth track and any street coupe. you notice the difference quickly. that being said, having then taken some laps with Bill Auberlen in the McLaren F1 race car, it took about 100 yards to realize we were in a different league.

i love the coupe ... but driving my 911 is such a different thing ... yes mine is a modern car. i have given some thought about getting another 2002 .... perhaps a tii, but comparatively they are worth the same amount of money ... and the creature comforts and pure driving joy in the 911 win.
