New Product

Thy have been used by the Brits for years. I don't buy all of their claims though, it's a bit of a stretch. Overheated coils, different timing on each cylinder, etc.

You can't appreciate how erratic a distributor is until you put a timing light on a crank fired ignition.
Distributors usually have a degree or 2 of timing scatter.....but
.... the real question is, if that really matters in the big picture. I think in normal, use it would be pretty hard to tell the difference. It would only matter if you were tuning for maximum performance
As far as coil heating....It's true the coil charging is time dependent (It's an RL circuit after all) so the dwell angle has to be set to allow full charging of the coil at redline RPM. The coil has to absorb the extra energy at lower engine speed and disipate it as heat. They are sized for that though....

123 makes a unique ignition module for the Citroen 2CV (no distributor on that car; uses a wasted spark, dual coil) to replace the points box, whose cam is driven directly by the camshaft. I believe that was their first product. 2CV coils are notorious for their early demise and difficult starting due to overheating. I also have a similar module in my 71 Fiat 500. They both work very well and the support through the forum is also great. However, I don't see a BMW offering on their website.

Yes,

it does matter. I tune for smoothest running to 3000 rpm. (Yes, I do freely stipulate the dark force has run strong through my past life and whispers to me often.)

If you are seeing scatter,(a wavering of the timing), there is a reason or several. For me, it was a slack timing chain and tensioner that passed the normal tests for those components ,yet; had a related effect. Find the source.

My timing is steady. Yours should be as well.

I remember someone on the 2002FAQ mentioning that you could send them a BMW 2002 distributor and that they could swap the drive gear from 2002 distributor and also perform a bit of machining so that one of their distributors could be used on a 2002.
