As you may know, I bought the black '74 CS with the Recaros and the 3.5l engine, and am going through it looking for the low hanging fruit of repairs/upgrades. It has a Getrag 265 5-speed, which apparently uses the later snap-on shift knob. Does someone make an adapter to allow use of the older design shift knobs, or are there older designs that use the later attachment? It currently has an Motorsport M knob, and it just looks out of place.

The dash wood is in great shape, but the doors need refinishing, with some delamination on the door jamb edge. Who do folks like for this task?

The tires are in perfect shape, but they are 10 years old, so I need to replace them. It currently has Yokohama Avids in size 205-55-R16 on the front and 225-50-R16 on the back, mounted on BBS RS. I don't know if the wheel sizes are staggered or just the tires, but are these the standard sizes for the car? A friend with a '74 2002 thought they were oversized.

Thanks!

Michelin pilot sport 3 a/s. Smooth, quiet and excellent adhesion.

Search for Bela on this forum. He has redone many sets and does excellent work.

VSR did a custom shift rod on Athena, used a Z3 shift kit for the short shifter, cut and welded the old threaded rod to the new so I could use the shift knob I bought from Murray Fowler before he passed away.

Your tire size is correct for a staggered set up. I'm running Kumho ECSTA Platinum 205/55 16s on BBS RS 001 ET 11 wheels which are fine for the kind of driving I do.

Here's the equivalency chart for different sized wheels.

OEM tire Size: 195/70/14 – dia. 24.7”, 77.7” circ, rev / mile = 815
Substitutes: 205/60/15 – dia. 24.7”, 77.6” circ, rev / mile = 817
Substitutes: 225/55/15 – dia. 24.7”, 77.7” circ, rev / mile = 815
Substitutes: 205/55/16 – dia. 24.9”, 78.2” circ, rev / mile = 811
Substitutes: 225/50/16 – dia. 24.9” 78.1” circ, rev / mile = 811
Substitutes: 245/40/17 – dia. 24.7”, 77.6” circ, rev / mile = 816

Do you have stock French walnut wood trim or a custom veneer? May have to send the rear wood trim too to get a decent match to the rest of the interior.
Madera Concepts restored all of my wood a year ago, they do excellent work.
Many swear by Bela who does exceptional work.

I have used - and would recommend - Madera Concepts of Goleta, California. See: http://www.maderaconcepts.com/NewSite/VehiclePages/bmw_vehicles.html#BMW_2800_3_0

But others will recommend other services - I'm sure Madera isn't the only good one.

You are lucky that your dash is OK - removing and replacing the dash wood is a big job. The wood on the doors and back sides is much easier.

There is a person on German EBay offering the 4 wood/ door pieces in either dark or light wood version for, I believe, around 160€. NMNA! Keshav
