I am new to the E9 world (actually first BMW ever). I recently purchased a 71 2800cs on eBay. I know, I know. I have owned lots of vintage cars over the years and this is the first time I bought something with out checking it out first. It wasn’t actually my fault, it was an accident, I was watching the end of the auction (reserve not met) and at the last second threw what I felt was pretty low bid, and bought a car. Anyway the car is in Santa Fe New Mexico (I’m in southern California). I have had several discussions with the seller and it seems like it might not be in too bad shape. The car had gone through some level of restoration six or seven years ago by 2002AD but there was no documentation. When I pressed for more info on the restoration, the owner emailed 2002AD, they had some memory of the work done which included: “a rust free California car stripped down to a rolling chassis, installed a rebuilt 3.0 engine, five speed box, and added a/c.” It turns out the shop is only about an hour away from my house so it will be a short drive to see if I can get more info on the work done there. The a/c compressor is bad and there are a couple of spots on the quarter panels that need some paint work. Beyond that every thing will be a surprise when I actually set eyes on the beast. I fly into Albuquerque Sunday, shuttle up to Santa Fe, pick up the car and head west. I am sure it will be an adventure, hopefully not of epic proportion. I am glad I have found this forum as I will unquestionably be asking lots of questions.

Cheers,
Steve

Congratulations!

Agreed...I also would have thrown a last minute bid, given the price.
I was also watching that auction (FleaBay, right?). Winning bidder "63lusso"
Absoultely love the Chamonix white w/ blue interior!

If my stable wasn't full, I would have absolutely been interested. I was a little concerned with the peeling paint soon after a resto. My thought was that it was indicative of a rush job, poor prep, or worse...body filler. Even so, the car looks stunning and even if you have to do a complete bare metal respray it appears well bought. Hopefully, there are no mechanical or rust issues hiding.

Let us know the complete story when you have a chance to thoroughly go through the car. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the car is "as represented". EBay is a scary world!!! Noticed from the pictures that when the car was on the lift being photographed, the tech used the rockers as a jack point (not recommended). I guess the fact that they did not crumble immediately is a VERY GOOD sign!

PS-do you indeed own a 63 Lusso? or is that a wish-list item?

acat2002,

The paint issue has me a little concerned as well, what seems odd is that the paint is peeling in almost the exact same spots on both quarter panels. Usually when paint lets go it is an issue with the prep under the paint. I have a good friend with a high end paint and body shop which will be one of the first stops I make after getting the car home. I noticed the lift on the rockers as well, as you say this may actually be a good sign. I have 850 miles between picking up the car and pulling into my garage, I should know most of the mechanical issues by the time I get home. I will post a travel log when I get back.

PS I picked up the Lusso several years ago before prices went into the stratosphere, also have a 72 911S

further evidence of those with good taste gravitating towards the E9 (nice toy chest).

Have a great road trip!

Home safe and sound

I just returned from Santa Fe, NM with the ’71 2800cs. The drive back was a little long and thankfully uneventful. There are a few issues that will need attention. First there is a rather loud whine, sounds like it is coming from the trans (but could be the diff I guess). It is speed dependant (the pitch becomes higher as speed increases, but is not affected by down shifting). Also it is only noticeable when you are applying power, if I come off the gas the whine goes away.

The other stuff is just little stuff like the temp gage, the heater, and the A/C are not working. I am sure I will find more of these things later. There is a small rusted through spot in the drivers side foot well, I have not found any besides that.

The car drove wonderfully and with out bad habits. I ran between 80 and 90 most of the way (850 miles) and averaged just over 23mpg for the trip.

Now that I have the car home I can really begin to go over it.

I need to find a solution to the photo hosting so I can post some photos.

If anybody has a suggestion on the whine in the drive line let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Steve

about that whine

When I installed a 5-speed trans from a long-unused '81 528i, there was a moderately loud whine in all forward gears. I was pretty disappointed for a while. I had drained and refilled it with a half-and-half mix of 90 wt and ATF. This was supposed to be the hot ticket in 4-speeds as used in 2002s; good for synchros but a little hard on bearings.

Well, gradually the whine went away, and after a few hundred miles I drained and refilled with straight 90 weight. No noises since.

I suspect there may have been some accumulated roughness on one or some of the trans gears, which was "polished" away by renewed use. Thankfully, I never found significant swarf on the drain plug.

YMMV

In your situation, I would replace the transmission and differential lubes, drive the car some and see if the noise goes away!
