While I had cancer trtment about 4 years ago there was a new hack to crisp up the shifter mechanism,
Don had my car at the time and did the hack on my car before I got it back.
It makes gear selection and engagement crisp and clear.
I have a e24 that needs a new clutch next week and since I will have the trans out I would like to do the hack for my e24 5 sp.
can anyone direct me to our name of the hack so I can retrieve it .
I tried calling Chris at shop but no response. Don is on the way to Spain.
Is there a set of parts for this hack and who would have them?
Hello and have a great day.

Hi Steve, the basis of this "hack" is to increase the length of the lower shift lever below the ball between it and where the shift rod conects. For my car, this was accomplished using a certain year e21 lower shift lever. Others have cut and welded a small section to lengthen it, others have switched entirely to the UUC system. Doesn't need much lengthening otherwise it becomes too notchy, like 1/2" to 1" or so max.

Thanks for the help. I did speak to Chris.
Shipping leaves it to late for install. Their hack is a E30 Ireland Ind. shifter
Just doing the plastic washers to clean it all up, hopefully.
I appreciate the contact and help!

I used a MZ3 (BMW PN: 25117527254) rod, it tightened things up too, but then you have to change to a new-style knob. I eventually went with the UUC setup Steve mentioned.

UUC also has metal bushings (vs plastic) they can send you to really tighten up the lateral play, even without a double-sided selector rod.

As an E24 owner, I know many have used the UUC short shifter setup. Personally, if you don't race, the factory setup is fine and just needs bushings to return to new. I found the job a PITA but worth it. Bavauto used to sell the refurb kit for 100 bucks, I know the parts are more costly today.
