Do you have are rear bumper?

If Bob passes I am interested... Do you have a rear bumper?

BTW Bob I hope that you know that the bumper is for a 1973 only and it is different... The 73 Bumper is pushed away from the body by 4 inches... The mounting brackets welded into the bumper are relocated 4 inches towards the rear... To mount it to an earlier car you have to modify the brackets and drill extra holes in the sides of the fenders.

you can get earlier brackets and use the same bumper... they are called spring clips in the OEM catalog. No welding or cutting needed. Just the side holes in the front fenders.

Waynesie, You are mistaken... The 73 Bumpers are different!

Waynesie,

To my surprise I learned that the 73 Bumpers are different! The bolt holes on the front bumpers are moved back. Think about it. If the bumper is moved forward 4 inches for the 1973 DOT specs then the mounting bracket location needs to change.

On the rear bumper they used a big oval hoop and there is only one threaded mounting hole and all of the threaded mounting brackets are in a different location. The 73 Bumpers are actually much weaker but they absorb a minor impact as designed.

Jeff,

I have to disagree with some of your response. Yes the bracket is different, no question, much stronger with the Y portion behind the bumper. If you mount it to a 72 it just sticks out further and looks like a 73. I think Don pointed out that Bob has a 74.

Chris

Is someone trying to convince someone else not to buy the bumper so they can get it????????? Just a joke, I couldn't resist.

while not defending Jeff ... i will defend the action of making sure that somebody is spending money on a part that WILL work correctly on their car. several people here have steered me in the right direction by giving me information about what will fit on my car / be correct for my car, etc.

lets make sure that we keep people informed. lets help people avoid frustration where we can.

I was pointing out that 73 is different...

As Scott said if the BP1 was buying the bumper for a pre 73 car he would be very confused as to why things just would NOT fit! None of the holes would line up and the bumper might seem too long...

Been there done that! Some parts look identical but upon very careful inspection they are just slightly different and do not fit...

Stan was here the other day and I showed him Sunroof Parts that looked absolutely identical until you put two of them together... That was when you could see that one was just 1/16 of an inch longer but that's all it took for the damn thing not to fit! I screwed around with that sunroof for almost an hour fighting with the POS until I finally decided to check the two parts side by side and noticed a very subtle difference.

i learned something on this thread - i didn't realize the ends of the 73 bumper were longer. i knew the over riders were different, as well as the bumper mounts. now i am aware of something to keep in mind when i buy some spare bumpers. i appreciate the info Jeff ... its good to know.

Chris, Those Sunroof Parts are mostly for Porsche 911s

STEERING WHEELS??... I know not of what you speak?

OK OK... So I collect Vintage rare Steering Wheels... On any car the one thing you always see and touch is the Steering Wheel. Having a perfect cracked free Original Steering Wheel is getting more difficult as they age... And usually the restored wheels look great but they tend to look and feel just a little different then original.

There are currently 12 very rare vintage steering wheels hanging on the wall in my office... Original Nardis from a Speedster, Mercedes 280SL+280SE, Jag...A few perfect E9 wheels (wood+leather)... Then Leather wheels from early 911s and from Mercedes SL65s and even a very rare Factory Wooden Rolls Royce Corniche steering wheel...

I was surprised to learn and I showed Stan when he was here that there are about ten different original E9 Steering Wheels that I have! The Sport Wheels I bought from Murray are different then other E9 wheels, one has a totally Flat horn button and the other has a Chrome trim ring around the horn button as opposed to dull silver paint... Some of the wooden bus wheels have chrome pieces at the end of the spokes while must are brushed. There are leather E9 wheels and the spokes on some are all black while others the horn buttons on the spokes are trimmed in silver...

BP1... The guy says that you do not want the bumper?

Bob, You have the first option on the bumper... Are you going to buy it?

Kinda like a museum in there!
Also amazing that BMW decided not to standardize.

BP1- Bob I won the ebay Auction but told seller that you had 1st option...

BP1-

Bob I won the ebay Auction but told seller that you had 1st option... I just want to make sure that you got it?

Jeff

Wow, I wondered who hit the Buy it Now or won the auction and then didn't pay the seller, I don't blame him for being upset.

A little bit late to the party, but the 73 front bumpers will fit on the earlier coupes. As mentioned earlier, the center bumper center is the same, while the bumper ends are slightly different, albeit with the same form and dimensions. I've a set of NOS front bumper (with 73 end pieces) to be mounted sometime in the future and also had a set of NOS (pre-73) bumper ends (since sold), so therefore I've already made the comparisons between the 2 designs. I've also talked to Carl Nelson, and he confirmed that the 73 ends will mount into the earlier cars with no issues involved.

The mounting hole on the bracket on both left and right bumper ends is slightly different than the pre-73 units. The brackets are welded onto the inside of the bumpers slightly further out than the earlier units. There is also a thick plastic spacers that are used on both side of fenders on the 73 cars. On the pre-73 coupes, a thin U-shaped strip of rubber is used between the fenders and bumper ends. With the tapering front end of the coupe and with the bumpers being pushed forward about 3-4 inches via the 2 longer mounting bars, the spaces are there to fill in the extra gap between the fenders and bumper ends.

Chris... I thought that BP1 Bob was buying the bumper so I passed on the Ebay bid...

Chris,

I bought the bumper on ebay before BP1 (Bob) emailed that he wanted it for his 74... Since Bob spoke up first on the E9 site as far as I am concerned the bumper is his! I did not want him to think I was trying to SNAKE him so I walked away from the ebay deal...

I thought I was being honorable... I will still buy it if Bob passes...
