FOR SALE - 1987 BMW M30 HEAD

I had this head rebuilt prior to going down the rabbit hole on the Bavaria when I decided to go with the M30B35 motor instead. This was to go on my original #'s matching motor. It was rebuilt by Motor Works, Inc. in National City, CA. I will attach the receipt along with the Ireland Engineering receipt in next thread as I could not upload all of the pics at once. I will have to upload some more pics as well. Looks like it only allows 15 at a time.

The head is the sought after, later year '87 (better jetting) and is supposed to be a big improvement over the older heads in terms of cooling. The cylinder head has been pressure tested and has had a leakdown test (all on receipt to follow). Other details of the rebuild are on the receipt.

I also will attach the Ireland Engineering receipt with the beefier valve springs (race M30) and Ireland Engineering New Billet Camshaft 284/280 degree M30 Late Style. Here is where I need to have full disclosure. I was told by SF Don that these cams which were supposed to be made from the same mold as Schrick, were not as advertised and made in China. I haven't heard first hand of any failures, but maybe Don can shed some more light on the situation. Don if I am not correct in anything I said feel free to correct me, not intentional.

I don't want to misrepresent this head. It's one of those things, it may work just fine, or it can fail. I am not sure how hard it would be to get a Schrick cam or another cam and replace before even installing this head on to your BMW but it would probably be the wise thing to do. I will let those of you in the know give your honest opinion and advice. Don't worry, I won't be offended at all.

The head has been stored on it's side as to not put pressure on the open valve, covered in plastic with some holes for venting as to prevent any moisture. As you can see on the Motor Works receipt I have had this since 03/05/2019. Wow....coming up on 4 years, hard to believe. I lugged it with me to Idaho (not sure why) but here it sits. Also, there are a few pics that look like there is a crack in the head. I will point them out once they are uploaded. I had a mild heart attack at first. It turns out it is just part of the casting, raised up, maybe where they broke the mold. Not sure if that is a common place to see that, but it is not a crack, nor a weld. I took some close up shots for you to see.

It will be shipped in a plastic container (pictured) and ratchet strapped down through FEDEX. I will get a shipping quote once I find out where it is going to be shipped prior to shipping and it will be added to the price upon mutual agreement. For now, I want to only ship within the continental US, if it does not sell then I will think about shipping Intl. Again, shipping will be extra.

I am going to discount the head from what I paid for it. I paid $895 for the rebuild and $712 for the Springs and Camshaft (see receipts). I honestly don't recall what I paid for the donor head I bought. PRICE REDUCTION as of 02/24/2023 - $1,300.00 + shipping.

Is that a block off plate, if so it has one, hard to tell from pic.
Tell me which area or pic and I will go look and take a few more pics of that area, I didn't notice any block off plate from taking the pictures but I also wasn't looking for one. Thanks for any pointers...

Nice head with dimples and a fuel pump plate.
Could be original Carb head with a late casting or a later FI head that was modded.

Hey Don, gotcha, should I take the plate off and take some pictures of the inside? Would that show either Carb head w/ late casting or later FI head? How can one tell? I assumed this was injected being an '87.

So, thoughts on the IE Camshaft for potential buyers here on this fine site?

Very few people will machine a FI head to use a fuel pump. Likely this is a later casting of an early carbed head. Really it doesn’t matter. The cam in this head is a Motronic cam. No provision on the cam for a fuel pump. I’m not a fan of Chinese cams or of cams from IE which are….Chinese.

I don’t think anyone would be a fan of a Chinese cam. Unfortunately that is not how IE presented it. So…..how much work to swap cams hour wise? General idea for anyone that wants to swap it out?

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of these cams being an issue? If so please elaborate. I’m curious. I personally don’t know anyone that has.

Swapping a cam only takes a few hours and is MUCH easier with the head on a bench. Depending on what equipment you have available will determine how long it will take. Most shade tree guys like myself do not have the special “iron maiden” that presses the rockers to relieve pressure on the lobes so the cam can be slid out. The alternate approach is to tap out the rocker shafts. Not a hard job, but daunting perhaps.

I do not have any experience with IE cams, but I’ve never heard anyone extol their virtues. You can pick up a Shrick from VAC, or a Dbilas from “the Internet”. I have firsthand experience with the former and know quite a few E28 guys with the latter. BenGerman on MyE28 had a group buy a while back and there were a bunch of Dbilas cams floating around. I’ve driven a high-comp B34 with one and was duly impressed. Might be a good idea for the new owner to search one out in case someone has one sitting on a shelf.

Personally, I would replace the IE before installing the head. If you have a distributor then you’ll need to make accommodations, not sure about the likelihood of going mechanical fuel pump but where there’s a checkbook there’s a way.

That said, having a fresh M30B34 head is a good thing. Paul Burke told me he always favored those when building heads due to the combustion chamber profile. If you want to take it further you can have the B35 intake valves fitted, but at this point since the seats are fresh I would just stick a cam in it and run it as is.

I guess it’s also worth saying I have never seen a B34 head with a fuel pump block off plate. As mentioned, BMW did not run Motronic fuel injection with a mechanical pump so that seems a bit odd. I didn’t cross reference part number stamped on the head but it might be worth doing. I have a B34 head at home which has an 89 clock stamp on it. My assumption is that it was a re-casting since by then they were well into B35 production.

Well, there are options for new buyer, it looks like the work was nicely done so if anyone is interested, please PM me.

I will be open to offers as I just want this gone at this point. Seems like there are a few ways to skin this cat to make it work for whomever is interested. Thanks for looking.
