NMNA - 1974 BMW 3.0CS E9 Coupe 3.5L Malaga - $33900

I drove this one when it was at $42K and passed. The car looks good in photos, but up close it's got a lot of goofiness....

Put a spoiler and go bumperless is a creative solution to the ugly 74 bumpers.

5 speed conversion should be 5k$ (or in simple math 1000 dollars per gear...).
Finding a decent Getrag 265 is getting harder in my humble opinion though.

Overall the car has a strange set of choices for my taste. I prefer more understated choices.

Do you recall what the rust condition was? How did the car drive? Was it easy to correct goofiness or stuff that would be difficult to fix? I would prefer a turn-key car but this one does have a number of positives (at least on paper).

I am curious too by what is meant by goofiness on this car? Are there overspray/detailing/quality issues? On the pictures it looks like a nice example. My only observation is that it has a trapezoid mirror rather than the flag style...

One flaw which does jump out at me is that the rear leather is quite loose fitting. Is this due to foam wear or simply poor installation?

The 74s could still have trap mirrors, later in the year the electric ones were available.

Looks good to me. Maybe the "goofiness" is the rear bumper and CSL chrome (stainless) fender flares (which I always hated). If it looks really good, then I say $29k to recover the cost of finding a rear bumper and 5-speed swap.

1974 had those style of PW switches???

The reason I cannot give a complete list of the things I thought were "goofy" is because I cannot remember them all since I saw and drove it last year. The car has some amateur rewiring. There are extra switches in the door jambs and trunk. As I recall, the interior is not leather, but vinyl now. There was something weird about the seats at the time and I think it was the vinyl interior. The hood and fenders paint has some issue I cannot recall. It is either cracking or crazing or something... I remember the photos impressed me until I saw it in person and was less than impressed.

These are some good points. It is so easy to see pics that impress only to be disappointed in person. Always good to hear about verdicts on cars seen in person!
