that would be true. i wonder if something got damaged (accident?) and they were able to get 2800cs rear end.
this car has been for sale for a couple of months.

there is an L jet engine in it, it has early rear seats, it doesn't have the twist knobs on the glove boxes (it has early push buttons), i can't tell if it has the telescoping steering wheel / lower panel or not. it doesn't have the 74 front seatbelts. this is a real mish-mash of stuff.

I had someone from the group do a ppi on this car a few weeks ago in Chicago and passed on it. We were puzzled by the rear drum brakes as well.

It's on consignment and the dealer wouldn't let me have any communication with the owner about the history and when the motor and trans swap took place, etc. It was painted at some point with the windows in. Rubber has paint over spray. I have tons of pics.

I will tell you, if anyone is interested in the car, they came down to $60k.

Some more info on it from a fellow member. Thought maybe to be a rebadged and VIN swapped 2800CS. It has rear drums, early sardine can window motors based on window switches and door plugs, rear mounted shoulders belts, probably an l-jet 528i motor, not CSi, with 177hp and missing other clues that would be there if a 74 such as adjustable steering column and two piece alu dash rail trim. The 2.5CS had fixed rear quarter glass, this one does not.

Fixed rear quarter windows in the 2.5CS?! Didn't know that, good to learn something everyday.

That is weird. After promoting the car was owned for 20 years by a friend of the dealer, they turn the deal into an AS IS transaction.

BTW, Riviera is such a nice blue.

VIN says it’s a US spec 74 3.0cs? Lot of clues that it could be a rebadged 2800cs Besides the rear drums. Early style brake booster present, the push button fuse box cover/door release is early e9 as well as the HVAC controls with symbols rather than the backlit wording found on 74s. The tachometer is has a lower redline than my 74. No trunk photos included but if it’s a US 74 the re-enforcement “sail” panels would be there.

there is just too much weird stuff around this coupe - darn right fishy. here's the bottom line, somebody should ask for 3 pics - one of the firewall VIN, one of the underside of the steering column and the other is a pic of the trunk interior with the floor panels removed. when looking at the underside of the gas tank, its too wide to be a 74 tank - no room for the trunk braces that a US 74 has. the firewall VIN will show if it has been tampered with ... and if it matches the plaque

yes, that's correct Rob. there's also one other thing that is cut off by the photo, but shown in the other gauge photo. 2800cs redline is at 6200 and the 3.0cs at 6500.
so my current thought on this coupe is that it was either a stolen or crashed 2800cs that didn't have a proper title ... and somebody had a 74 vin tag and joined this car together with the title for that car ... and filled in the VIN on the firewall. my advice is to stay away from this car.
