I was going to grab it as a spare, but don't really need anymore taking up space.

He sent me a picture in text. Input shaft looks kinda crusty. Not sure what would cause that???

Probably was sitting for long enough that the residual oil on the shaft went away. I hear it rains occasionally up where you are. I had some VW transmissions that sat in a pole barn in Missouri for a few decades that started to get that look. If it's superficial it could be cleaned up but if it's pitted you'll get some wear on the clutch disk splines and maybe the bearing in the flywheel. Hopefully its long period of sitting means it has lower miles than if it was in use this whole time, but it looks pretty dirty so replacing the seals and getting it checked out would be a good idea.
