Noise from under the car

Hi,

I went for a drive with my D-jet E3 yesterday and when accelerating through the gears everything was fine - until I started to go faster than 70 mph. Then a zapzapzap - sound started under the car, close to the gearbox. Of course I backed off immediately I drove to my garage to check it.

I drove the same road two weeks ago, even going 100 mph didn't provoke the mentioned sound at that time. Now it was there regardless of which gear the car was in (tested in 4th and 5th at 70-75 mph) Even without any gear and just rolling at that speed gave the same result - the noise was there. So I tested to accelarate to 50 mph in 2nd gear (4000-5000 rpm +) and that was OK - no noise. So it seems to be car speed related and not engine speed related.

The car got a 5-speed Getrag conversion last year with E12-brackets and new guibo, gearbox mounts, centre bearing etc. The Prop shaft is straight and aligned. I've been driving about 3000 miles since without any problems. The check in the garage didn't give much either. Everything was firmly fitted and no signs of wear to the guibo or centre bearing could be seen.

Could it be the tach drive at the gearbox getting old...?

Any thoughts on this?

Cheers

If it is not your speedo connection consider looking closer at the guibo, mine appeared fine on visual inspection but when I took it out it was cracked in 2 places.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your input. I had a day off today and looked a little deeper into it - the guibo actually had small signs of wear but of the type that comes from a misaligned driveshaft. The prop shaft bearing also had a small crack in the rubber (not going through though). So I ended up replacing the old prop shaft ang bearing with a new one as well as installing the BW65 type thinner guibo with original spacers. Since the original LSD made some noise (front bearing) I Replaced it with a rebuilt 40% unit I bought a while ago. Now the car is quiet and seems to drive smoother.

Tomorrow is drivers safety school and auto crossing with the E3/E9 folks :-)

I'll try to make some photos.

Cheers
Anders
