Northeast USA E9 folks: garage space?

Howdy!

I might be moving to the Boston area for work, and as prep for that, I have been looking at houses in the greater area. Coming from Michigan and Georgia, one interesting thing I am noticing is how rare 3 car garages are. In both of those previous areas, I have been able to get a 3 car garage for a minimum of additional cost at a relatively low housing entry price. In MA, however, it seems getting a 3 car starts generally north of 2 million dollars, (and even then, it is a rarity) which seems mind-blowingly expensive to me.

Given there's a group of Coupe owners up there who probably don't daily their Coupe, how do people handle having a project car in the Northeast? Does everyone rent a garage? Is that a thing? I want to make sure I can bring the car and factor that cost into my budget, and therefore my asking salary. Thanks.

Not in Boston, but I needed space so I store the coupe in a car storage facility. Climate controlled and plugged into a trickle charger. Available anytime I need it.

a garage rental from a neighbor would be less expensive, but probably less secure and not climate friendly.

I stored my coupe for a few months when I painted the 911, but as a general rule I hate when any of my cars are not here in my small 2 car garage.

Back when I lived in the Boston area, I found a person with a large garage who rented out space for the winter months. Word of mouth, local newspaper classifieds, and craigslist (as a last report) are good places to start. Yeah, Boston area houses are very expensive these days!

If you have the head space a 4 poster lift pays for itself in less than 2 years with the added benefit of having the car at your disposal.

I give my garage space to the E9 and park my DD outside the garage.

As a temporary (or not so temporary) solution, you could rent a 10’ x 20’ secured storage space like I just had to do for our 350Z convertible, until you find the long-term answer.

I have often thought about buying one, but I think I might have to change the roof on my garage to increase the available height.
What model lift do you have and would you recommend it ?

Include insurance in your calculations. It is more expensive to insure a car that is stored offsite.

Not in Boston proper (meaning downtown BOS and the immediate surrounding area) look for what is called contractors bays to rent. They are separate bays usually in a single building or two. Try Craigslist and other local sites for advertisements. We live on Cape Cod but also lived in Boston proper, so I'm familiar with the car storage issue.

My insurance (Hagerty) did not change, but it is a good point as you will want to inform them of the new site where it is garaged.

I have two friends that live in the Boston area that store their cars with me in Ohio. They say its cheaper to bring their cars here for the winter than to rent a space local to them. I have too many cars for my garage so I have a heated 20x50 storage unit for my the other cars and theirs. I usually rotate one/month from storage to the house depending on projects to make sure they all get used.
