Yeah, originality is the key. Original e9/e3 equipment tools are scarce, but ever soo slightly different to the (much) more widely available e12, e24 and later tools.
but these are NOT e3 / e9 tools. these are e12 / e24 / e28. the e9 screwdrivers didn't have the printed Heyco - it was cast into the screwdriver
I have 3 large red screwdrivers. One has Heyco screened on it, the other 2 are unbranded
Since we are talking about original red screwdrivers, I have a question. I have most of my coupe's original tools, but they are somewhat rusted. Does it make sense to have them rechromed?
I'm a bit shy about sending valuable parts to distant places in the hopes they will be properly treated. Many decades ago I sent some 50's vintage VW parts to a chrome shop in LA (advertised in Hemming's Motor News) and they ruined them by engraving the order number on the back side and laying on so much chrome and leaning into the polisher so hard the parts weren't their original shape anymore.
Is a DIY chrome process worth the time and effort?

I'd be curious how you proceed with the tool rechroming dilemma. I too have a bunch of original but now rusty parts.
Whenever I look at video's I see them grinding off layers; with the delicate text on the handles that would loose the text, and it wouldn't be acceptable for me.
Anyone know if companies can also rechrome after chemically stripping (just) the chrome?
I am planning on starting with just one, see how it comes out. It'll be a learning curve I guess.

The whole finish will be bright chrome not like the originals. They have no way of restoring the non polished surfaces. Ask me how I know!

Thanks for this info. I know there are a lot of steps and strong chemicals involved but it might be a satisfying winter project. Not this winter as I'm packing to move back to Austin this spring. My tools are pretty rough, but I'll keep them with the car as they have been for the last 53 years. Just not in the tool tray though...More details and the movie:
