Oil Filter change hack method

Hi. I have the original style Oil Filter canister that bolts from the bottom; such a PITA to change. After some struggle, I eventually used a small bar clamp to compress the canister to the oil mount then used a zip tie around the bar clamp and canister to prevent slippage. Made it significantly easier to screw in the bolt. Not sure if this method had been mentioned before.

Possibly simpler than removing the mount with canister.

a photo will certainly help to understand

A shorter bar clamp could clamp to the top of the mount. Mine had barely enough purchase on the lip but the zip-tie held things taut.

Hopefully useful to someone.

The bottom bolt canister is a real pain, but I have found it is much easier and far less messy to remove the canister and the mount in one piece from the engine block...also lets you fill up the canister with oil before you remount everything.

i always do it this way, and there is not so much trouble, it works reasonably well
anyway i do not fill the canister up before remount

Much simpler to get a top bolt canister from a later E12. In days gone by these littered the back streets and such as I could easily and quickly grab a good replacement.

I remove the four bolts holding the cast housing to the block, and remove the filter and the casting. Then it is easy to replace the filter without making a mess.

Grass is always greener. On the e24 forums, the guys hate the top mounts since you have to undo them 90% from above, then get below to finish and let it down. When putting it back, you have to jam your cheek against the engine to reach far enough down to hold it from above. I bought an E12 one for my bavaria but have been torn about putting it in.

I have a top-bolt setup on my Bav and it was pretty easy to get the filter out, even before I relocated the battery.
