Oil pressure

If that's the case I'd have it towed to the shop and not risk running it anymore with no oil pressure.

Take your valve cover off.
Bright LED flashlight look down the front and verify oil chain is on crank gear.

For my own final verification, I took Peter's suggestion to remove the sensor and crank it. There was no mess to clean up. I was about to drain the oil, remove the filter and maybe even remove the valve cover as Don suggested but decided it best for my mechanic to do the forensics first hand. It will be a week or so before he has room in his shop. I will follow up then with what he finds.

Jeff, I have been traveling on and off the past couple of weeks so haven't been able to coordinate flatbedding it yet.
I need to do so soon to stop my inquiring mind from trying to convince myself that having a numbers matching engine is overrated!

I use times like this as an excuse to buy new toys. Get yourself a boroscope, have some fun, and then tow it in.

So whatever happened here?

Jeff,

Nothing yet, I am next in line at my mechanic's shop. He is the only one who has worked on it for the past 35 years and is semi-retired now. Hopefully next week I can provide an update.

So I finally took my car to the shop for some forensic work to determine the real cause my oil light has been flickering at low idle for quite some time now. It's been 29 years and about 280k miles since the engine was rebuilt so was not really too surprised to learn the cam shaft is worn and one of the piston rings was cracked.

A bit related to the original post... if you find a 80s/90s 5cyl Audi in a breaker (can't remember the models, but higher spec cars) they will likely have VDO oil pressure and temp gauges. These can be fitted to an M30 with minimal drama
IIRC you need a thread adaptor to fit the dual pressure sender (signal for gauge and idiot light) to the head, in place of the normal sender.
And the temp sender fitted in the filter housing, I think the filter housing varies from M30 car to car though. I did this mod on my M90 E24 and got lucky as the filter housing had a blanked off port I could use with no mods

...hope you get this all fixed up soon

The VDO Series 1 have chrome rings and white pointers like OEM so a closer match than the Audi/VW which have red pointers and black rings.

Hope it can be rebuilt in time for the PVGP or Lowcountry Tour in the Fall.

It will be ready but unfortunately I have conflicts and will not be able to make it to the PVGP which is probably the go to event this year. Still planning on driving up to the Lowcountry Tour.
