Original equipment tyres

How about this. Either one is "OK". Both period tires that come in the correct size. Doesn't matter a fig which one you go with as long as you are happy...personally my cars getting XWX because I think they look better but that's personal opinion...

that is exactly my point, and it ihas been like that always, i have never said which ones "were correct", basically because i dont give a damm
on the contrary the big mouth has kept on saying that the only ones were the xwx,
even in this same thread he mocks longstone saying that "twist reality" "you will have to photoshop it"
now there is a proof that both were used

either one is ok for somebody who drives their car today, as you do deQ. we all have different perspectives, i believe that some perspectives are focused on concours perfection ... which might be at odds with your perspective. i love the pirelli cn-36 from a visual and driving perspective. i road rallied a '73 porsche 911 back in the day that had cn-36's and they were sure footed ... another car i rallied in had XWX. i drove a 73 mgb-gt at the time and it had cn-36's on it. i have always found a difference in the way the 2 tires performed - the michelin slid very predictably and the faster you went ... the more it slipped. the pirelli stuck and stuck ... until it didn't. from a 'design' perspective - i love the cn-36 ... its just cool. but i get that in Germany, the CSL might have been primarily delivered with the XWX ... and therefore a more correct choice for the CSL concours perspective.

i will leave you with a specific thought (paraphrased) that is significantly older than all of us (put together) - confucius said, the superior man is liberal to everything although he might not agree with all of it ... the inferior man agrees with everything but is liberal to nothing.

How cool is this, scaffolds yet in the welt building…

That must be late 1971 / early 72. The scaffolding is around the BMW museum, and it was gone during the 1972 Olympic games. The CSL is standing on the roof platform of a BMW-parkinglot, which was torn down many years ago and replaced by the BMW- World building in the same place. The CSL is interesting too. It has crome grills on the fender, and the aero cover underneath the front axle, which was believed to add two kph to the topspeed.

Agreed both are great tyres. The XWX is still manufactured in the size 205/70VR14 and, without doubt, XWX is a great tyre you would be happy on XWX.

The CN36 also comes in 205/70VR14 which is also a great tyre, however the hot off the press exciting news is that Pirelli now make the 195/70VR14 Cinturato CN36 which is actually the correct size, and it costs a big £onner less than the XWX.

When we recomend tyres we go purely based on the tyre we beleive is best for a car. We don't really consider cost, but we won't encourage you to spend your money for no benefit. (however unfortunately of course it is often the case that the more expensive tyre is the best.) However in this case these 195/70R14 CN36 are a bobby dazzler for you chaps. They are actually the correct size. They have actually got an extremely high quality carcass that perfectly suits you chassis and maintain the correct handling characteristics. they have bang upto date modern compounds which means the grip in the wet is exceptional.

Have you seen this independent Klassik AutoBild back to back tyre test. what is really interesting is that in this test there are 2 modern tyres, that cannot match the CN36.

https://www.longstone.com/images/ti...-porsche-911-185-70-r15-classic-tire-test.pdf

In a modern tyre test the CN36 is one blip off perfect wet braking (beating the 2 modern tyres in the wet.)

Oh and they look good!

If it was just a choice between 2 tyres in the size 205/70R14 then it would be a tough call CN36 or XWX. Originality is of interest. It is a reference for suitable carcass structures and dimensional data (and fashion) if we were talking about the Ferrari Dino i would recomend XWX, and the Fiat Dino i would recomend CN36. However in this case both carcasses are perfectly suited, However the CN36 is the right size.

2 kph ! That is a serious difference

Maybe that is why that under engine cover is made from such a lousy material; it's pressed paper with a painted coating. Hardly durable, but enough to claim reaching 210 km/h?
In recent years a modern reproduction was available. I have it on my car, and it fits very well. Without it, it looks like something is missing, at least to me. And for those who want it original, as on the picture I posted, it is nice to have. I did not want to have the huge air dam. But everybody has a choice. And the entire car was not expected to last longer than 12 years ...

Incidentally Michelin do still make the 175HR14 XAS

I love the passion on this tire choice. In general I am happy with either of two similar choices.
I draw the line with sodas, I love Coca Cola but would not drink Pepsi for any reason. Confucius should have said "I have nothing against Pepsi, on the contrary, I hate Pepsi:.

This is from Ron Wakefield review in road and track of his new 1971 2800cs. He states he hated the continental D70-14 that it came with it new and replaced them with Michelin XAS 175-14. This article outlines his entire tire drama.
