Original finish for engine fasteners - yellow cad or ?

So the unpainted metal brackets etc were yellow cad, were the nuts and bolts also yellow cad originally? Specifically in the engine compartment?
 
For some reason, I'm thinking that I'm going to get my ass kicked in the judging at Hilton Head.
Hah, no, my brother in law is figuring out what's best for his Tii engine compartment redo. The only thing I am focusing on is getting to HH in one piece.

Steve, I think so. They lose their color as they age and can look to be silver. And besides, they look great!

Chris, Legends is a Clean Car Contest only. I don’t know when they are going to pick who gets to be judged as there are only 50 spots in total.

I agree they look great, I'm trying to make the case for YZ, and out of my own curiosity

I recently removed my ignition coil, which is original to the car. The Bosch date code is 221 (Jan '72).
The bracket and hardware, where not exposed, are clearly yellow.

The majority of Porsche fasteners in the 60s/70s were zinc plated, not cadmium plated.
Many of the BMW fastener brands, such as KAMAX, VERBUS and GRAEKA are also found on old Porsches.

Great pic, thanks. Fasteners such as intake manifolds, thermostat housings, water pump bolts etc.

Great pic. Hard to tell from the photo, but my read if it seems to suggest that all fasteners north of the oil pan are yellow. The oil pan bolts and water pump bolts appear clear (silver). I am sure there is more to it than that.
 
Until the early `70`s all of the engine bolts were high tensile, black in colour. They changed to standard bolts with yellow plating later, probably part of the cost cutting that was going on then....
 
I've seen this motor in Munich and it had many incorrect aspects to it.
I must be insane for wading into this discussion (with my lack of knowledge on “correctness “), but isn’t it generally accepted that BMW at that time had what might better be called guidelines for how they finished cars? Guidelines they were apparently okay with deviating from when it made sense. I imagine something like …. “Fritz, we’re not shutting down the line because you’re out of yellow cad fasteners, find something that works.” That would explain why there are so many examples of “original “ cars that appear to have slight differences. They didn’t have sophisticated supply chain departments with computer models forecasting and ordering everything to ensure every exact part specified arrived in time. So, if you buy that, having an engine displayed with slight differences from pure spec ( can’t believe nobody mentioned the red vs yellow dipstick) is in a way accurate for the time.
 
I don’t think they stocked alternate nuts and bolts at that time either, even in the early 70s Kaizen was being practiced where improvements were methodical and continuous. That motor if I recall has the wrong valve cover for a carb car, (does the tube for FI wires mount on horizontal studs on the cover?) no dome nuts on the cover it has nuts which were changed in 75 on the 2002s, BMW Classic today has no clue as to what was used.
