Original Ft. Worth coupe

"Buy It Now" check cleared the bank...she's officially mine!

I'm incredibly excited about this one! Hopefully my third try (coupe) is a charm. Car is an all original survivor in the truest sense. Original owner definitely knew what he had and treated it as such from day one. I sure wish the '73 BMW metallic paints didn't have so many stability issues, but I'm going to try to preserve it to the absolute best of my abilities. You just can't recreate original! This car has patina and solidity that I haven't experienced in the many restored cars I've seen over the years.

My favorite color w/ sunroof, ac, leather, and 4-speed from the factory. Fully documented 42k original miles, all numbers matching, records, tools, original manuals, publications, spare parts, etc. We're going to shoot a quick documentary film about the car's history and capture stories of the dad and son's bonding over this car. This was always his son's favorite car from dad's extensive collection of significant cars.

Peter, I'd love to stop by Austin on my drive down to San Antonio and see your recently restored coupe/let you see this one.

**Only thing I need now are two original blue door pockets. The rest of the original parts are still here. Can anyone help me out?

Love to have you down for a visit! Let me know your plans, I know some really nice drives in the hill country and have a ranch up there where we can stop for "refreshments".

Peter

PM sent on the map pockets...

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Now, time to double down on the preservation research. Is Gummy Phledge still the best rubber protectant/restorer?

Engine bay: I have a Daimer pro steamer, but am a bit worried about the moisture. I read about the cryogenic engine cleaning recommendation, but didn't hear from anyone who tried it. I'm mostly looking to retain all of the stickers and stamps/factory markings while cleaning it up a bit.

Is fluid film the best for undercarriage preservation? The original owner had it sprayed by one of the aftermarket RustCheck type outfits upon delivery in '73 (not a permanent coating), so I'll be looking to clean that off entirely and replace with the best modern non-permanent replacement. Luckily that original spray retained a factory fresh finish underneath - the spare tire and jack had obviously never been removed before my inspection as the tire left streaks in the coating revealing perfect Fjord paint below.

Any recommendations on a glaze/wax/sealant for the checking paint? I'd love to keep all of the original paint, if at all possible, as I'd assume there are very, very few original metallic paint coupes remaining.

Maybe we should create a Sticky Thread with the board recommended/ideal preservation products to properly maintain a coupe?

Vince, thanks for your offer on the map pockets - I'll definitely keep you in mind if something a bit more affordable doesn't pop up over the next few months. Right now, I've completely blown my budget just to hop on this rare opportunity.
