Sadly its time to send my parts car (Miss Feb if you bought the calender) out to the scrapper, and I am stripping what I am able to before the sawzall. New exercise for me. Some small families have been evicted already. I started today with the license tag aluminum piece and the tail lights...(the poor thing is so original that Murray Fowler said I should save it as a reference tome )...The question is about the rear bumper; there is a small, maybe 3/16" black plastic u-channel that runs the perimeter from end to center, center to end...clipped to the inside edge (can be seen in the calender shot as a black line)...both of the other two cars I have are missing these two pieces, not surprisingly and I don't see it on Penske parts...Is it original or someone's bright idea? Looks all the world like it belongs, subtle enough that I hadn't ever noticed it...

my rear bumper has a little rubber gasket between the bumper and the body.

what is left on the car? I need rockers. I can't imagine that a northeast parts car has better rockers than a pacific northwest vehicle. I also need interior parts. Shoot me a pm. Thanks!
 
yes that black u channel is supposed to be there. On either end of the bumper between the bumper and the body of the car. The 1973 models have a big rubber part there. The earlier cars just have the strip.

Without pictures it's sort of hard to tell. But as I read the above statements, you two guys are describing different things.
 
u-channel

Jay is correct...the tiny u-channel is not in that picture; it runs from that rubber fitting to the center of the bumper, then picks up again and runs to the other rubber fitting on the passenger side (with your photo as reference)...on the top leading edge of the chrome bumper...covers that raw edge closest to paint, but doesn't touch the body.
As in a previous post on what mechanics throw out, I think maybe when cars are painted this thin extruded part disappears...I'd post a pic if I could.

Or a bodyshop may have added that beading to the bumper on your car. It sounds like the generic, black "U" channel that automotive paint shops sell. Having that bead on the bumper would make installation a little more foolproof.

dave: What is the model year of your coupe? My '70 didn't have the beading that you describe (though it has beading on the front ends of the bumpers, as Stan showed). I guess the question is whether certain year coupes had the longer beading.

Funny you'd say that, as I had the same thought last night, thinking about my 76 2002 that will be repainted and have a picnicbumper-ectomy, replaced with early chrome ones...even using as a temporary safety precaution is a great idea; bumper fitting with new paint is tedious. And I think that you are probably right.

...and roundel stickers on the aircleaner!...could'nt bring myself to pick on him, tacky as they were. Like armcovers on a sofa. He was an original.
Thanks for the input...I'll save the u-channels for the 2002 re-paint/re-bumper...
