I sometimes see BMW steering wheels without horn buttons for sale. Like this wheel I think is an original euro "sport" wheel. Is the horn button that would be needed common to US and Euro models? Are other under horn parts needed too?

I understand there are differences with E10s, but can the (older) horn buttons be interchanged?

I have that wheel. It looks really similar to the other horn buttons. I think they are all made by Petri and have the same three plug mounting system. Each wheel has these three ribbed plugs with a hex key end. They screw into the chrome plate and press onto the horn pad. The thing is that the female side of the horn pad has hard plastic inserts that split, and the horn pad no longer stays in place. Even if the actual pad was different, I suspect that the chrome plate that screws to the wheel is the same. There are three plugs for the horn pad and three screws for the chrome plate. You can see the six holes in your image above.

The Bavaria horn pad does looks slightly different, but I would be surprised if it doesn't fit.

If it were up to me I would sell the no-horn steering wheel in countries like Italy and China where they use it every 50 meters.

The pads are similar but different, the pad on these is pushed out from the rear leaving the chrome ring it mounts to. If you pry it off like the standard wheel (which includes the chrome ring) it breaks. Under all that the horn function is the same. The e3 pic does not use the same pad although it looks identical.

Thanks guys! Is the end result that one needs a Euro horn pad (presumably unavailable) for the Euro wheel I pictured? If anyone has some pictures of backs of horn pads that would be a help. I'd be happy to put together a FAQ thread on this if it doesn't exist.

I'll try to snap some pics. My steering wheel fell on the floor and the horn pad rolled somewhere. :) Don't stack parts against the garage door!

The measurement is distorted by the camera. If you need real measurements let me know.
