Paul and I have been having a discussion on these three bolts. He says they are painted when the body is painted just like the bolts for the hood and trunk hinges. Since they have to come off to install the wheel liners I say they are yellow zinc. Can anyone confirm who has an original coupe in this area.

Chris, I know my coupe was repainted when a lot of metal work was done by the original owner in 1991, but I am not sure about the inside of the trunk.

someone told me that they were supposed to be black like the hood latches, I don’t know I’m leaving mine the body color with yellow zinc bolts/screws…

All the ones I have seen have been painted. @ccr2002 is probably a good resource on this one.

Many e9’s don’t get their trunk and bay painted after a respray, so BaT is your friend on this one. Here is the Baikal CSL. Make note of the flaking paint on the nut. I see overspray in there, which leads me to believe that they sprayed the trunk with that nut off, and the paint is original.

Mine are painted body color but I am not the first owner...

Chris, these are painted on my '72, but the bracket was adjusted and touched-up at some point.
The car had an exterior re-spray, but is otherwise unrestored. The only yellow zinc I notice is the upper and lower latch hardware.
The upper hinge area shown below is original paint...

Chris,
Seems odd that they would paint them separately at the factory as parts and then assemble them in the trunk on top of the fender covers. Additionally taking a socket wrench to a freshly painted part usually leaves marks. Upon closer inspection of some of the pictures it looks like at least a couple of them have paint brush marks over the mounting plate and the screws. Having said that I like the yellow zinc better but I imagine your going for judging points.
Regards, Jon

Not sure about e9s but I have an original paint 02 and they are painted. Also my e9s are painted but the car was painted recently.

my initial thoughts aligned with @Ives ... having painted nuts on top of the wheel arch panels seems odd. I looked at a couple of very original ceylon coupes, and the nuts / washers seem body color ... NOT yellow zinc. I wonder if people with some very original coupes - @ccr2002, @BMW Pete might verify.

Random sampling from google images. I see some reflections on a few support arms, but mostly paint.

It looks like they painted them installed, did the final installation then took a comedy paint brush and slathered paint over them after they were done.

Note the slop on the wheel well cover and the less than careful brushstrokes above the bolt heads and washers as also seen on other examples above.

From my original paint survivor - I'll vote painted.

Fully in line with the consensus that seems to develop; painted body color over yellow CAD from factory.
My car has been fully restored in the 90's before I tore it down again. It still had the original bolts, though without paint. I start to think mine had their paint removed in the 90's.
I'm all for originality, but as a mechnical engineer, I do find it a bit strange to paint fastners. Not sure If i'll be painting them.
It feels like painting over your 110V/220V sockets and light switches in your house.
